Barça continues to be a Circus.

Although the circus no longer comes to town, Barça have a done a great job in making sure the circus is still alive and well for the entire football world. The month of February saw the Barça board and the team perform quite a few circus acts. Consequentially, that caused mixed emotions from the Blaugrana fans and followers consisting of eye-rolls, anger and bitter disappointment.

It all started in early February when Barça’s sporting director, Eric Abidal said in an interview that the Barça players were not satisfied nor worked hard under previous manager Ernesto Valverde. That drew an immediate rebuke from his former teammate, Lionel Messi who dared him to back up that statement and name names. Whenever Messi responds to comments made by the board, you know it’s bad, and it once again showed the poor management by this club.

When that storm quietly died down, the equivalent of a hurricane hitting a volcano happened when the Cadena Ser radio network reported that the Blaugrana paid a social media company  €1 million to attack those who are against the board such as future presidential candidate Victor Font, former Barça players Carles Puyol and Xavi, former Barça player and manager Pep Guardiola, and even some Barça players such as Lionel Messi and Gerard Pique. The club immediately denied the story but as of March 3, 2020, president Josep Maria Bartomeu has yet to face the media and give us some real answers. Perhaps that €1 million could have been put into good use elsewhere, like bringing back former Masia player Takefusa Kubo and not letting Real Madrid outbid us for the Japanese Messi.

In between those two circus acts, we were informed that winger Ousmane Dembele’s return from injury was a quick act because he suffered another injury and was ruled out for six months after undergoing successful surgery on a hamstring injury. With the team short on players, what does the Barça board do? They sell two forwards, first teamer Carles Perez and Barça B player Abel Ruiz, and also loan out center back Jean-Clair Todibo. Perhaps this was their magic act of less is more.
But Barça did have a trick up their sleeve and managed to sign Danish international Martin Braithwaite from Leganes after paying his €20 million buy-out clause. So why did the club spend €20 million on a player who can only play league games when they could have saved €20 million and relied on Carles Perez and probably Abel Ruiz if he ever had a call up with the first team? The juggling act of the club when it comes to roster decisions continue to baffle many.

On February 22, 2020, Barça fans were afforded the chance to see Braithwaite in action for the first time against Eibar. However, it was the fans who were the spectacle of the Camp Nou, and not the team, when prior to kick-off, man fans waved white handkerchiefs and chanted "Bartomeu, resign!" for about seven minutes before the game finally kicked off. The message from the spectators to the ringmaster was heard and seen by the world. Barça though won 5-0 with Messi providing a great performance by scoring 4 goals while Braithwaite came on as a substitute and played a key role in setting up the final two goals which gave the fans short term amnesia as the club were back in first place in the league table.

Whatever jubilation the Blaugrana faithful were feeling was evaporated when Barça played Napoli to a 1-1 draw last Tuesday. The match saw Busquets get booked which meant he would miss the second leg. With the team already short a midfielder for the return leg, Arturo Vidal decided to be a clown by getting a late red card. After the game, the usually quiet Busquets hinted at how poorly assembled this team with his comment “We are a little short at the moment.”

This past weekend, Barça were to perform the impalement art by being knife throwers at the reeling and spinning Real Madrid. Instead, Barça failed to deliver and took a pie to the face by losing to Real Madrid 2-0 and relinquishing the league lead back to their arch rivals. We have been watching this circus act since 2010 when Sandro Rosell became the Barça president before stepping down over the Neymar transfer saga before Bartomeu succeeded in becoming his successor in 2015. Since then, it’s been more of bring in the clowns as the club wastes away Messi’s talents. In a few months, we will see if Bartomeu and this board will step down in the summer for early elections. If they don't, they may be successful in making us watch this circus become a carnival.

Rosell’s Departure Mean New Elections Must Be Held This Summer.

New Prez
FC Barcelona saw its president Sandro Rosell step down and was replaced by Vice-President Josep Maria Bartomeu. For some, the end of Rosell’s era was welcomed after watching him rule the club in an unpopular fashion. Overall, Rosell’s time as club president had its share of ups and down but the era at the club was full of success shrouded in controversy. However, his final act in appointing Bartomeu his successor is not one for him to make, but one for the club members to make, and as a result, elections need to be brought forward this summer for the election of a new Barça president.

I was one of the many who never was a fan of Sandro Rosell and I am not surprised that the heat finally got to him. I previously mentioned back in September that “the fans cannot accept or tolerate a presidency that is run on broken promises and lack of transparency. Rosell should know, he was allegedly one of the behind the scenes players in Laporta’s Censure Motion. Like the old saying goes, “What goes around, comes around” and it is Rosell’s turn to sit on the hot seat and see who jumps ship.”Well he did in fact jump ship.
Rosell mentioned his final address as club president that he had endured threats directed at him professionally and personally; aimed at himself and his family. That is deplorable and is never ever tolerable and I hope the culprits are found and punished to the extreme letter of the law. Former president Laporta also encountered threats, and even attacks, from the Boixos Nois too during his reign. There are democratic means of protesting objection, and violence or threats of violence is never acceptable nor tolerable.
Nevertheless, Rosell’s era seemed to upset fans and club members which made the club seem distant and out of touch at times. Rosell’s presidency had its share of controversial moments.  I mentioned back in September some of those decisions such changing the rules in becoming a member, “Socio”, the Qatar Foundation sponsorship deal forced upon the club without members voting on it first, outsourcing Barça TV to Madrid based company that turned out to be a bad idea when a video leaked Xavi’s off the record comments about Real Madrid which embarrassed the player.
Sandro
Another issue of content was Rosell’s interest in exacting petty revenge against Laport and Cruyff, the two men who he never got along with and resulted in him  stepping down as Vice-President after the conclusion of the 2004-2005 season. His beef with Cruyff was an embarrassing moment for the club after the fallout for refusing to acknowledge the honorary president title bestowed upon by Laporta and that the club had neglected to make payments to Cruyff’s foundation that was finally paid this season. Some attribute these factors as part of the reason why the club’s most successful manager, Pep Guardiola, decided to walk away from the club.
Laporta
There is also the disappointing treatment of its players during his time. Both Abidal and basketball player Pete Mickeal were let go after being told that they would be welcome back after conquering their serious medical problems. Furthermore, David Villa was sold for a low transfer while they dropped the ball with up and coming star Thiago. Rumors have it that the club’s greatest goalkeeper of all time, Victor Valdés, is also leaving because of differences with the club. However, Vice President Javier Faus’s recent comments that he did not believe Messi’s contract should be improved was indeed an embarrassing black eye and painted a poor picture of the club.
For all Rosell’s flaws, the club still continued to be successful on the pitch and did make strides with regards to social media. Furthermore, Rosell did bring financial stability to this club and its coffers but there are doubts since some dispute how badly the club was in debt by the time the time he took over. It wouldn’t surprise me if the next regime also investigates this regime’s finances in the future. Some also wonder if the club’s positive finances is more because the club gutted other sports sections of the club such as the basketball team which is one of the biggest clubs in Spain and Europe but remain sponsor less on their kits.
Neymar
In the end, Rosell was his own worst enemy with many unpopular decisions and controversy such as being under investigation in Brazil thanks to his ties with Ricardo Teixeira, the former Brazilian Football Confederation president; his ties with Viagogo company which is a company allowed to resell Barça tickets; not allowing free admittance to children in El Clasico this year; his ties with the hooligans Boixos Nois, the ones who attacked Laporta, after the Grada joven project in one of the stands of the Camp Nou fell through amidst police objections, and allegations of impropriety in the Neymar transfer. He also had a knack of not presenting himself well when addressing the media with embarrassing comments such as the elimination of color copies to save money and indicating that the club was struggling to pay wages just painted a poor image of the president.
Neymar
Rosell promised us transparency as club president and yet nothing was ever transparent when he was in charge. However, his era has ended, or so it seems. Josep Maria Bartomeu is now the acting president and it seems that Rosell’s project will continue to be carried out till the term ends in 2016. I met Mr. Bartomeu once during the dinner hosted by the Penya a few years and he was very friendly and courteous. He sure did receive a lot of praise for his demeanor and style in talking to the media the following day after Rosell’s farewell speech. However, action speaks louder than words and he has the rest of the season to audition for this position.
I said audition because this new president Bartomeu should not be allowed to run the club till 2016. Sandro Rosell was elected by the members as the club’s president. The members should be the ones to choose who should be the next president or Bartomeu will forever be considered a puppet for Rosell and will never be taken seriously. If he believes he is worthy of being Rosell’s successor, then he should run for the position himself in the summer. When former presidents Josep Lluís Núñez and Joan Gaspart resigned, their successor only lasted till the end the season before elections took part. That same protocol should apply here. Lest we forget that, it was Rosell who opposed Joan Laporta’s appointment of Cruyff as honorary club president without the club members voting on it. The club belongs to the members and they should choose who should run it.
Barto
Thus, Mr. Bartomeu has till the end of the season to win over voters. He has the upper hand against any would be potential candidate. His actions from here till the end of the season will paint a picture of what type of president he will. However, the members should be the ones who decide who should be Rosell’s successor, not Rosell. Elections have to take place this summer.

Barça Should Be Run Better.

Messi Sandro
Barça continues to enjoy success on the pitch and in financial reports but the way the club is run leaves a lot to be desired. Being run as a fiscal business entity is great if it means the club is in safe financial hands but that same treatment should not be used towards its staff and players. Messi’s outburst is a perfect example of the Barça board making themselves their own worst enemies.
There’s been a lot to cheer for as a Barça fan. Yesterday’s memorable come from behind victory is a perfect example. However, it is still difficult to forget what transpired a few days before the match. Messi’s comments a few days ago to a radio station were unexpected but not surprising. Messi came out with a scathing attacking on Barça Vice-President Javier Faus following the latter’s comments in a recent radio interview as well. It’s rare that we get to see Messi display such temperament in person, let alone on the pitch. However, the club only have themselves to blame for getting such a reaction from Messi.
Faus
Mr. Faus’s stated that he saw no reason the club should improve Messi’s contract while also referring to Messi as “this gentleman” were idiotic and a display of lack of respect and affection by the club towards Messi. It’s not usual that the club seems to lack a bit of common sense when it comes to dealing with individuals at the club; be it managers or players or even staff members.
Even if FC Barcelona continues to grow as a business entity that reaches all across the globe, the club still seems to have a long ways to go in how to treat their own better. Everyone knows how the club’s relationship is with Johan Cruyff, one of the main reasons this club is where it is today. Furthermore, Guardiola left the club under a shroud of dark and mysterious clouds. It is a sad tale of affairs when the club seemingly has no relationship with the last 3 managers who won the club their only Champions League titles; Cruyff, Guardiola and Frank Rijkaard.
Headline photo
Moreover, their treatment of those figures and current players seem to lack some common sense. It’s embarrassing when the club president, Sandro Rosell, offers to welcome Johan Cruyff to the Camp Nou without first paying the 30,000 euros owed to Cruyff’s charity organization. It’s mind boggling when the team discards one of their important medical trainers without getting some feedback from its players. It’s disturbing when, supposedly, a player suggests a candidate for the goal keeper’s coach position and is denied that choice because such candidate used to play for Real Madrid once.
There is a lack of warmth displayed by the club when it comes to handling things. The club appears to be run by businessmen and accountants who seem to neglect that they are also dealing with human beings who have feelings. The club’s decision not to renew Eric Abidal was heart breaking and somewhat revolting. One director promises that Abidal will have a new deal when he returns to action and a few months later, Abidal is being told his services are no longer needed. That surely disappointed fans but breaking your word to a player is downright disrespectful and you don’t need to be a psychologist to see that this could also bother current players who wonder if their futures lies elsewhere.
Messi’s surprising display of fury when Barcelona Vice President Javier Faus made the foolish statements that he saw no reason the club should improve Messi’s contract and referring to Messi as “un senyor (this gentleman)” were pointless and smacked a sense of out of touch. Messi replied that Faus was someone who “knows nothing about football.” Thus, the flame had been lit.
Messi upset
Fortunately, Messi’s father put all of us Cules’ fears to rest by reassuring us that Messi was not going to leave the club. Sandro Rosell also replied that his door is always open to Messi. This was the last thing Messi needed following outlandish allegations that Messi and his family were connected to drug trafficking and money laundering. We have grown accustomed to such shady reporting from the Spanish capital media. It’s easier to find someone guilty in the court of public opinion than it is in actual court. I am not expecting the club to start threatening lawsuits on behalf of the player but it would also help if the club was not also adding to his distractions from afar.

La Liga’s Big Two ~ Politics Only Hurts Themselves.

Over the years, Barça and Real Madrid have had their battles on the pitch through their players and off the pitch through the clubs’ hierarchy. More recently however, both clubs have been engaging in political battles to their own detriment. The politics are damaging their own clubs on the pitch for now and the future.
A new La Liga season is upon us and with that comes the usual talk about the El Clásico sides fighting for the title, although Atlético Madrid has earned the right to enter the mix this season. As usual, we will be bombarded by the usual unsubstantiated rumors and gossip from both cities’ press, which never hides their allegiance to the big two. However, we are also witnessing a strange phenomenon where both clubs are engaging in political warfare that is only damaging to themselves and not to their rivals.
Mourinho and Iker Casillas’s falling out was one of the world’s worst kept secret during last season. It was normal to expect Casillas back in the starting lineup for this season. However, that has not been the case as Casillas has been relegated back to the bench this season. This relegation came amid rumors that some of the Madrid directors were not too pleased with his role in the breakdown of the Mourinho relationship with the players, clubs and fans. Madrid directors can feel that they are off the hook after Casillas suffered an injury in their first Champions League match and can now watch Diego Lopez play in all competitions until Casillas returns. Yet, it does beg the question of why would the club treat an icon like Casillas this way and still expect him to stick around.
Moreover, Madrid displayed another decision that smacked of the clubs’ hierarchy making the on field decisions. Gareth Bale was signed by the club without a proper preseason this summer to stay fit. Instead of bringing him along gradually, Madrid opted to start him from the get go. Sure, he notched a goal in his debut before he had to be replaced when the fatigue factor kicked in. So it came as no surprise when Bale suffered an injury while warming up over the weekend for his next league start. Madrid’s decision to show off their star player without giving him proper time to get in shape was misguided and dangerous to their own players’ health. Perhaps they should let the manager make these decisions.
Barça too have had their own self-inflicted wounds due to the political stance of the clubs’ hierarchy against the last Barça president Joan Laporta and Barça icon Johan Cruyff. Sandro Rosell’s agenda has driven a wedge between the fans as he continues to wage his battle against Laporta. Some would say that this same agenda is the reason why Guardiola is currently managing Bayern Munich. As former Barça handball player and potential president candidate, Enric Masip, recently lamented the poor relationship Rosell has with former Blaugrana managers. Masip was obviously alluding to the fact that this current Barça president does not get along with the three managers who helped guide Barça to Champions League success.  One would expect the complete opposite after the success Cruyff, Rijkaard and Pep brought to the club.
Some also attribute the club’s hierarchy as the reason why Victor Valdés is looking for a new team for next season. Apparently, Valdés wanted Spain’s national team goalkeeper coach, José Manuel Ochotorena, to hold the same position with Barça when the position became available last summer. However, the club, via Zubizarreta, shot that option down and instead hired José Ramón de la Fuente. The reason behind that purported decision stemmed from Ochotorena’s Real Madrid past. Of course, José Ramón de la Fuente’s Barça history probably also played a part in his hiring. So the club’s ideology has probably cost them the best keeper in their entire history and that is a position that took over a decade to replace.
Will other players jump ship if Rosell continues to have his way and continue to drive the wedge deep between the fans? The decision not to bring Abidal back for at least one season smacked of ignorance and disgrace. Furthermore, Iniesta did not sign Barça’s first renewal offer and one of my friends did remind me that Iniesta’s best friend and the guy he sits next to on every flight is none other than Valdés.  I’m sure they’ve had a few things to discuss about the club’s hierarchy.
In the end, it would be best if the directors of clubs would do their jobs and not engage in deciding who starts and who sits. Also, it wouldn’t hurt if those same directors would exercise some proper judgment and lead the club without engaging in petty revenge to the detriment of the supporters. These types of decisions only reflect poorly on the club and can be detrimental to their own image. For now, only time will tell before we see the lasting impact of both clubs’ behind the scenes antics.

Barça paying for transfer neglect.

An apparent need for Barça to strengthen its back line was discussed plenty this past summer. Yet, here we are, another season without any viable re-enforcements to protect Valdés’s first line of defense. Consequently, we have seen our beloved Barça continue their habit of conceding soft goals much to the dismay of many players and fans alike. Doubts about this club’s problems disappearing anytime soon have crept up again which begs the question why was this problem not addressed again.

Two summers ago, Barça were going to sign a center back and it didn’t happen. This past summer, Barça huffed and puffed and were going to sign a center back and it didn’t happen. We have a new manager and we’re seeing the same mistakes happening plaguing Barça’s defending. Cheap soft goals conceded at the end of a half or close to the final whistle have raised doubts if this club can eradicate last season’s performances against Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

The Champions League kicks off this week and with it, comes the difficult calendar that sees Barça playing featuring in plenty of midweek games which cuts down on the valuable rest between matches. Rotations of the players is vital to preserve the players but our back four are down to just five players now that Jordi Alba is out of action for three weeks. Thus, we’re stuck with Dani Alves, Montoya, Pique, Mascherano, Bartra and Adriano with the return of captain Puyol supposedly near the corner. Will this be adequate for the club to compete in all competitions or will they sign some new players to strengthen the back four? If so, the question would be who?

Sandro Rosell and Zubizarreta better start looking into this issue. Many would mention names of players but perhaps the club needs to re-examine their scouts. Why is it that the likes of Porto and Dortmund can sign players that many clubs become obsessed in signing while Barça buy the likes for Alex Song? I don’t expect Puyol’s return to cure the problems and that is why Barça needs to address this issue now in time for January or for next season.

Barça cannot allow this pattern to continue. Failing to address this issue yet again is a recipe for disaster and Barça have already been warned. Failure to do so is unfair to the fans and the players when the talents of Messi, Iniesta, Neymar and others are wasted because this team cannot protect a lead. Zubizarreta and the club are on notice; fix this issue.

Barça Continues to Neglect their Vulnerability.

For the past two seasons, there was an obvious need for Barça to sign another centre-back during the summer. Yet, the club continues to make a mess of things in their approach to address this glaring issue. Last summer, the club opted to sign defensive midfielder, Alex Song, hoping that he can also play the role of a centre-back, which did not come to fruition. This summer, they pursued players that were far too expensive with clubs not interested in selling. The league kicks off in a few days and Barça seems intent on letting history repeat itself by not doing the right thing.
George Santayana once said “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” Sandro Rosell and the men he has entrusted in running this club seem ignorant to such saying. Once again, FC Barcelona prepares for another season and once again, the pressing need to sign a center back seems to be failing miserably. The pursuit of Thiago Silva seemed desperate while the pursuit of David Luiz seems misguided. One player used it to get a new deal with his club while Jose Mourinho is in no hurry to assist Barça in strengthening their team without paying a heavy price.
th
Let’s not forget what many deem as Barça dropping the ball in their handling of Eric Abidal. Perhaps offering the veteran defender a year extension would not have been a bad idea. Yet, Barça opted not to retain his services and made it known before the end of last season. Well, here we are and they have yet been able to sign a center back with the league kicking off this weekend.
Much has been made of Barça’s style of play but history has shown that the club’s success did not come from its offense only. One only has to look back to their previous three successful Champions League titles and notice one common trait; their defending. This club continues to have problems scoring in the UEFA Champions League Semi-Finals but at least their defending did not let them down. Back in 2005-2006, they won away 1-0 in Milan and drew the second game 0-0 to clinch a ticket to the Finals. A few years later, they played to a scoreless draw against Chelsea in the Camp Nou before drawing 1-1 away in the second leg. 2010-2011 Semi-Finals saw them grab a 2-0 away victory in Madrid before playing to a 1-1 draw at home.  Thus, Barça made it to the Champions League Final not by scoring plenty of goals, but by keeping clean sheets.
Voando-no-Barça-Adriano-vibra-com-retorno-a-Wembley-Marcante-580x360
Their last two eliminations by Chelsea and Bayern Munich saw them concede 3 goals, and 7 goals, respectively, while they only conceded 2 goals in their previous three Semi-Finals. Even their elimination by Manchester United in 2007-2008 was by an aggregate score of 1-0. New manager Gerardo Martino needs to repair Barça’s defensive flaws by relying on his current players coupled with youth players. His mission would have been easier had the club signed a new center back.
However, all we keep hearing is the club continuing to pursue players who come with a big price tag. One hopes Rosell and Zubizarreta do not become desperate and actually pay Chelsea’s asking price. They dropped the ball and need to exercise some proper judgment and not lose track of their obligations of being fiscally responsible. As George Santayana also once said, “Fanaticism consists in redoubling your effort when you have forgotten your aim.”

Give Abidal A Chance.

Abidal header

With all this talk about changes and players leaving, there is one player who deserves a second chance with Barça after winning a second chance at life. Barça’s biggest Achilles heel this season was poor performance by their defensive back four.  Those poor performances stemmed from the absences of Puyol and Abidal. Abidal has had a difficult year ever since he had to fight his battle against cancer. Now that he is back, there is talk that he won’t be brought back for the upcoming season. However, with all that this club went through this season, Abidal deserves a chance to win a spot on this team for the upcoming season.

Abidal’s amazing return to action this season has been well documented. It was courageous and inspirational. Prior to his medical problems, Abidal was well liked for his on pitch performances as a left back and as a center back. Abidal though became a beloved icon for his courage battle in beating cancer and his inspirational attempt to return to the playing field. Abidal has laughed at the face of death not once, but twice.

Obviously, what Abidal went through this past year took a toll on his body. You don’t need a medical degree to know that Abidal was not going to be back to his old self anytime soon. His return was going to take time. However, it is disheartening to read rumors that the club is not interested in having Abidal back for next season.

Abidal back

I understand that the club wants to make some changes with the roster but I don’t agree with the club asking Abidal to quit and take a position with the club. I am a firm believer that Abidal still has something to offer. Perhaps Rosell and Zubizarreta should give Abidal a chance to win a spot on the team during the summer preseason games. If he shows he is fit enough and can play at this level, then he deserves a shot on the team. On the other hand, if he struggles or seems to have a lost a step, then the club would be justified in asking Abidal to retire and take a position with the club or allow him to play for another club.

with tito

Abidal has been through a lot these past two years. The least the club could do for him is just give him a shot and see if he still has what it takes. Right?

Busy week for Barça.

title

FC Barcelona sure had a busy week with Mascherano signing a new deal and the return of David Villa and Carles Puyol to training among the good news headlines. However, they had to deal with some whining from the Catalan FA and Espanyol following the cancellation of the Copa Catalunya. Fortunately, that brief moment of cry babying was forgotten when the good news was announced about Eric Abidal joining the team for their trip to Paris when they face Paris St. Germaine and three former teammates.

What a busy week it was for Barça indeed. It kicked off with the good news that Javier Mascherano had signed a new deal with the club that will see him remain with the club till 2016. I won’t lie. I thought his transfer was one that never made sense. Busquets was already the starting Defensive Midfielder and his playing time caused Toure Yaya to leave. So why sign a well-known player who will be playing as a backup to Busquets?

Mas

Fortunately, Guardiola used him as a center-back and the rest is history. Sure, he was caught out a few times late last season that allowed the opposition to exploit him as the weakest link. However, his overall performances since joining the club have been impeccable and here’s hoping the next four years will see more domination from Mascherano.

The other good news was seeing Puyol and Villa back training. We always knew Puyol would be back but there are doubts about David Villa. When he broke his leg back in December, doctor s said he would be out a few months. Villa’s injury has been rather a mysterious one. There was talk of Villa coming back late in the season against Real Madrid so he can be ready for Euro 2012. Well, the injury took more time than expected and we never saw him play for Barça or Spain. I think this is Villa’s last season with the club, especially with Neymar lurking around the corner.  He will probably feature next week for the first time since December.

Villa

Hopefully the old David Villa will return and not an old David Villa that we saw struggling throughout the first half of last season before the big injury. He was playing hurt supposedly so we will see. I think this is his last season to impress, especially with Neymar still lurking about.  Unfortunately, this sport is notorious for “what have you done for me lately” when it comes to treating players and Villa hasn’t really done much.

As for the Copa Catalunya being scrapped after no one could work out a decent schedule and Catalan FA objected to Barça’s B team representing. Good Riddance. If the Catalan FA doesn’t like what transpired, then maybe they should abstain from calling up Barça players for their annual international friendly. I don’t recall the club raising a stink when backup goal keeper Jorquera suffered a major injury while representing Catalunya in their annual December friendly that forced Barça to get Pinto. The cup has no real meaning and the fact that Mourinho did win this cup for Barça when he was the assistant manager, doesn’t really give it a warm spot in our hearts either.

I enjoy the idea of the Copa Catalunya but the Catalan FA and Espanyol have to wake up and realize that Barça are involved in other friendlies so they can’t adjust their schedule to accommodate them. Maybe they should have scheduled it before the end of the last league season and not wait till the last second. Poor planning is what killed this cup, not Barça. The Catalan FA should accept that it will never become a popular summer tournament as long as Barça has lucrative deals to play other teams and in other countries at the same time. In my opinion, they should just hold it like the TIM Trophy in Italy where Milan, Inter and Juventus play each other all in one evening in three round-robin 45-minute matches. That’s the only way I can see this cup being held in the future but that’s not what the Catalan FA has in mind.

Barça now will play their third summer friendly today when they travel to France and face PSG. The venue will be a special one for Barça. The Stade de France was the venue where Barça defeated Arsenal to win their second Champions League title. It will be nice for those who featured or were on that team and celebrated that magical night, to return to this venue again. This friendly will also feature three former Barça players, Thiago Motta, Maxwell and Ibrahimovic, representing the French side too along with Thiago Silva, a player Barça were very interested in signing this summer. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN Deportes and streamed live on ESPN 3.

3

However, the big star attraction of the trip is Eric Abidal. The French defender made the trip to his country with his teammates today. Sometimes we forget that these players are human, regardless of their talent, achievements and wealth, so it is great to see Abidal up and about as he recovers from the medical procedures he underwent to save his life. He has given Barça a lot as a player but also a lot as a brave man. Here’s hoping he continues to recover and resume a normal healthy life with his family.

Abidal shows us that no one is invincible.

FC Barcelona’s shocking news today that Barça defender Abidal will have to undergo a liver transplant caught us all off guard. Sadly, it was one year ago today that Barça announced that Abidal had a tumor on his liver. Abidal has a difficult journey ahead of him because it’s not his career that we should be concerned about. Rather, it’s his life. Today’s news should serve as a lesson to everybody that no one is invincible when it comes to one’s health.

Today definitely was a sad for us Cules. One of our greatest memories of 2011 was seeing Abidal selected to hoist the Champions League trophy in Wembley stadium. So it was very heartbreaking for us to learn that Abidal has to undergo a liver transplant procedure. Here was the club’s official statement about this matter:

"During the next few weeks, the player will undergo a liver transplant as a result of the progress of his liver disease. A transplant was considered an option from the start of his treatment a year ago. At the express wishes of the player, the Club asks that the maximum respect for the player's privacy be observed.”

When I first heard the news, I was devastated. This was no longer an issue of when will Abidal be back in action to play for us. It was more about whether or not Abidal can survive and be there for his wife and kids. His wife and kids are more important right now than his football career. Now my blog work on here always deal with Barça related topics but today I thought I should aim it at health.

I hope that today’s sad news will serve as a reminder to all of us that no one is invincible. Cancer and other illnesses do not discriminate against gender, race, ethnicity and it doesn't matter if you are poor or rich. Abidal is a professional athlete who was in great shape and followed a good diet and yet he is facing a very serious medical situation. Today should serve as a reminder for all of us to watch over our health, especially men.

It has always bothered me that men have neglected to see a doctor. Be it for routine physicals or when they are in pain. A CNN article back in 2008 mentioned that the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality estimated that American men are 25% less likely than women to visit a doctor. In that same article, Dr. David Dodson, recommended that healthy men under the age of 50 should get a regular checkup every 18 months while those over the age of 50, should see their doctors annually.

More recently, an Esquire article indicated that only 55% of men have a primary-care physician. Another article cited a survey that estimated that men make a 150 million fewer trips to the doctor than women, every year. The article also explained that this is very common in most men across the world since most men believe that a visit to the doctor is a threat to their masculinity along with fear, denial and embarrassment.  It was believed that men are taught from a young age to “hold their heads high and get tough” since admitting to pain or any other problems could be seen as an admission of being weak  which would threaten male pride and machismo.

Regrettably, I am not that surprised by these findings. The purpose of this piece is to convince males, and also females, to make sure and go see a doctor. Be proactive, not reactive, when it comes to your health.  Men, don’t just do it for yourself, but for your families too.  Now I know it’s not cheap to see a doctor today, especially if you don’t have insurance. Many years ago, a friend of mine found out he had testicular cancer early in his twenties and he wasn’t insured. He ultimately had to file for bankruptcy. However, being alive is priceless and he doesn’t regret it.

With that said, don’t let the financial cost deter you from seeking medical help or scheduling an annual physical. Check and see if there are free clinics nearby. We here at the Penya always thought of ways to do something for the community and maybe we can organize an event where we can get doctors – calling all Penya doctors - to meet with people of the community and give them a physical for free. That sure would be great.

I am sorry if you think this is some sap who comes off looking like Jerry McGuire after he ate bad pizza and wrote his mission statement. This is not about me. It’s about everybody. Our health is too valuable to gamble with and we just as saw with Abidal that it doesn’t matter who you are; you never know what might happen. No excuse outweighs the value of being healthy. So please, do the right thing and take the proper measures.

The Miami Penya sends its best wishes to Eric Abidal as he prepares to receive a liver transplant and hope for a speedy recovery. We are all with you and hope that you will get through this. Anims Abidal.

8 teams left, 10 Barça players still in the World Cup.

With the World Cup Quarter-Finals just around the corner, we are now down to eight teams. From
those eight teams, FC Barcelona has 10 players left in this tournament. The tournament started with
14 Barça players, a big majority of them representing Spain, and although not all advanced to the
knockout stages, some left a positive and negative lasting impression. The 10 Barça players means
that FC Barcelona is the most represented club left in this tournament and some of those players
have even been selected as man of the match in this tournament.

For Spain, FC Barcelona has Victor Valdes, Pique, Puyol, Sergio Busquets, Pedro, Xavi, Iniesta and
the new addition to the club, David Villa representing “La Furia Roja.” The other two players are
Argentina’s Messi and Brazil’s Dani Alves. It is possible that all ten players will be participating in the Semi-Finals and it is also possible that all ten players can be returning home if they suffer a defeat in the Quarter-Finals. Fortunately, none of the teammates will be facing each other this round but there is a strong likelihood that Messi might face his fellow teammates in the Spanish squad in the Semi-Finals if both teams are victorious.

Additionally, four players thus far have been chosen as man of the match. Messi was chosen for his
performance in Argentina’s match against Greece. The other three were all for Spain with David Villa
being chosen in Spain’s match against Honduras, Iniesta against Chile and Xavi in Spain’s Round
of 16 against Portugal. The four players who are no longer in the competition are Rafa Marquez,
Touré Yaya, Abidal and Henry. Rafa Marquez was the only one eliminated from the knockout stages
while the other three were eliminated in the group stage. France’s Abidal and Henry had a
tournament to forget with France’s horrible performance and off the pitch controversies that made
them the least liked country in the competition. Abidal especially will want to forget the game against
fellow teammate Marquez after committing a foul inside the box that gave Mexico a penalty kick. Touré Yaya also could not participate in the knockout stages after the Ivory Coast finished third in their group. Rafa Marquez captained the team in their last two games of the group stage and the Round of 16 loss to Messi’ Argentina.

The World Cup also has had its fair share of Blaugrana players doing well in this competition with
Xavi completing the most passes in the tournament with 368 passes, with Sergio Busquets second
with 327, and Piqué fourth with 306 passes. New addition to FC Barcelona, David Villa is tied for
joint top scorer of the World Cup with 4 goals, together with Slovakia’s Vittek and Argentina’s Gonzalo Higuain, Even though Messi has not scored any goals, he has the most shots and shots on target in the tournament with 23 shots, 13 of them on target. Yet, both Rafa Marquez and Touré Yaya did manage to score a goal in this tournament. Andres Iniesta also scored against Honduras in the
group stages and perhaps Messi will finally break that goalless streak against Germany in the
Quarter-Finals. Only 3 more wins ensures one of the remaining eight nations will be crowned as the
new World Cup champions, will one of the Barcelona players be hoisting that precious trophy?

Qué Pasa Barça? – Time to Adjust, not panic!

Greetings fellow Barça fans and hope you all were able to put the club’s latest loss behind you and not let it stress you out just as I have. I want to first thank FC Barcelona Supporters Club Miami-Penya Barcelonista de Miami for allowing me to do this and look forward on doing more in the future. My name is Ibrahim Ayyub and I have been a Barça fan since 1994, when I was teenager in Lebanon, and have been following them ever since. Big reason was thanks to the 1994 World Cup where I fell in love with Romario and Stoichkov and then discovered they were teammates at FC Barcelona thanks to the World Cup Panini sticker album for allowing me to discover this bit of information.

Growing up in a war country pre-internet era made it tough to follow football and back then, I only cared for international football and only cared for, and still do, follow the Dutch national team, yet I couldn’t believe it that Romario, Stoichkov and Koeman were all on the same team. Back then, I had just missed out on the glory years of the Dream Team but these years of following Barcelona have rewarded me with great football, great players and great experience of being with the club when things are great and when things are disastrous.

From Lebanon to America, I still have been following Barça and the icing on the cake for me was this past summer when I went to Chicago to see my first FC Barcelona game against Chivas and then went to the team hotel and was fortunate to meet Dani Alves, Iniesta, coach Guardiola and club president, Joan Laporta. That day ranks up there with my wedding and graduation from law school.

Just in case you were wondering who is my all time favorite player, then that honor goes to Luis Enrique, who displayed great passion and leadership that I think is at times missing from this current club.

This season was supposed to be a season of change and adjustments. Gone was the era of Frank Rijkaard and a new era of Josep Guardiola was ushered in. Many thought the move was a bit risky since Guardiola had only one years’ worth of experience and that was with the Barça Atletic / Barça B team in the lower divisions. I actually welcomed having Pep as the coach and actually wanted him to replace Rijkaard before the Champions League encounter against Manchester United.Pep is a legend of the club and is a true Culé, so he know what the expectations were and what the club’s history and legacy is all about. Sadly the team started off slow and everyone was criticizing him.

However, the results started going his away and soon enough the club was off to one of the greatest starts in the club’s history. Come late December, they had defeated Real Madrid at home and had a 12 point lead, were comfortable in their Champions League pursuit and managed to stay alive in Copa Del Rey. Unfortunately, that 12 point lead has now shrunk to four points and questions and tempers have flared about what has happened to the club.

What happened to this club is that they are human. These guys have played more games than their direct rival Real Madrid and fatigue and wear and tear is starting to set in. That’s the cost of trying to win cups. Barcelona are still in the hunt for a treble while Real Madrid crashed out of Copa Del Rey back in October and might crash out of the Champions League next week. Barcelona players were bound to get tired and it seems that’s just the case.

The defense in the new year has allowed 14 goals already following that gut wrenching loss to Atletico Madrid that I was fortunate not to have seen. The offense has been a bit stagnant, midfield not providing service, and the keeper Valdes starting to resort to his old shaky self. They have been playing twice a week for a while now because of International friendlies along with Copa Del Rey and Champions League games. Injuries have forced some players to play more than usual and thus, fatigue is a becoming a big cause of concern. Rotations cannot be implemented when players are hurt and because of that, players are playing more than they should with less time to rest and recover.

The bottom line though is that should not be an excuse. To win titles, these are things a club must be ready to face and endure and the club captains should show the leadership to not allow the players to relax. Inter Milan and Manchester United are in the same situation and they still are hanging in there. I believe the lack of leadership is why this club has thrown away points. Some would say it’s injuries; some would say it’s players creating distractions by what they say through the media – Eto’o and Yaya’s agent’s comments to the media; or some would say it’s because of Victor Valdes, and I would like to throw in the curse of Kobe Bryant declaring he is a Barça fan thanks to that ESPN Magazine cover back in January. It’s not that farfetched when you look back at what happened in 06-07 season. He declared back then that he was a fan too during the California visit of the club’s USA preseason summer tour and then look at what happened next. Bad Karma repeating itself again?

Seriously, the club’s leaders need to make the players focus and not lose track of what is important.

Now is not the time to talk about contracts but time to think of the next game. All Pep should do is play last season’s 4-1 loss to Real Madrid to wake them up. Just the part where they welcome the Madrid players alone should let their blood boil. My life motto is “It’s not how you start, but how you finish.” This club started well but that means nothing if you blow it in the end.

Pep has a big task ahead of him and must adjust and not panic. I still have faith in him and think he tries his best to accommodate and appease everyone. Coaching is not just about tactics, but also about managing egos and keeping spirits up. Basically he is a manager, a father and a psychiatrist. He can get the job done but the players have to step it up. Eto’o, Xavi and Valdes need to play better. The defense needs to stop playing sloppy and the midfield needs to provide better service. Eto’o and Henry have eight and seven goals in this new year, with Henry scoring in six games while Eto’o has only scored in five games in this new year. Too many goals have been conceded from dead ball situations.

Time for now is to adjust and not panic. Maybe Pep needs to be a bit more considerate of protecting a lead and not expanding one. If you’re winning 2-0 or 3-0, then slow it down and control the game and be more counter attacking than continuing to look for more goals. I am not saying to become negative football and depart from the club’s beautiful football, just be smart in when to play beautiful and when to sit back and then go for the kill. Protect the lead with two defensive midfielders. Adjustments and not panic means maybe playing Pedro on the wing and giving Eto’o a breather and let Henry or Bojan start as the center forward. Now would be a good time to let Caceres play in place of the injured Abidal and not over use Puyol as a fullback. Maybe it also means time to bench Valdes for Pinto.

A long time ago, I defended Rijkaard’s decision in playing Valdes over the Turkish keeper Rustu. He was young and smart and benching him would only ruin his confidence and he repaid that opportunity by leading this club to two league titles and a Champions League trophy in that magical night in Paris. However, it now seems that no matter what, Valdes will never stop looking shaky. Four consecutive shaky performances where he has let down the team with his decisions have cost the club. He is 27 now and just don’t see him ever letting go of his cartoon Johnny Bravo image; the image of he looks good but is oblivious to what’s going on. Valdes is a good goal keeper but there are times where you just wonder what was he thinking. Pinto has been playing in Copa Del Rey games which are never short of pressure, experience in the Champions League with Celta Vigo and is a past winner of the Zamora for those who want the argument that Valdes is a past Zamora winner and should start this weekend in my opinion and go the rest of the way. By the way, Casillias just won his first Zamora award last season and don’t tell me he wasn’t the best until he won that award.

The fans need to support the players too and not jeer them when the going gets tough too. Jeering Valdes is not going to help his confidence at all. Mallorca semi-final leg away this Wednesday will be vital indeed and then have to get ready for Athletic de Bilbao at home this weekend. Good news for us fans is that these two games a week will be getting less. Advancing to the Copa final or being eliminated will mean more rest for the players and of course we all want them to advance. Additional good news is that Iniesta will be back soon too.

Finally, I would like to address one thing before I sign off. FC Barcelona updated their official site not too long ago and one of the new features that they added was a legends section. I think that was something that the old site lacked and was great to see this feature added. However, when looking through the listed names of the players, I could not get over the fact that there was a one glaring omission. José Mari Bakero.

The club has updated that page since its introduction but Bakero’s name still is not there. This man was a member of the “Dream Team” and won 13 titles in his time as a member of the blaugrana. His last second header goal against Kaiserslautern helped save the club from elimination through away goals rule in the Champions League (back then was the Champion’s Cup) which they would go on to win that year. Hopefully the club will add his name to that list soon and if anyone knows those in charge of that section, please mention it to them.

Well I hope you enjoyed this and please stay positive and remember that the season is not won or lost in February, but in May. Until next time, keep the faith Barcelona fans and don’t give up.

Visca Barça!
