Time for Barça to Take Charge.

After 18 games, FC Barcelona sit four points clear at the top of La Liga. They are La Liga’s Winter Champions, which is a nice label. But the Blaugrana faithful know that Winter Champions don’t get trophies in the trophy cabinet.

Happy New Year everybody. Barça are back in action this Saturday after enjoying a holiday break. They return to action enjoying a nice four-point cushion ahead of their archrival, Real Madrid. After a wobbly October, Barça made amends for those poor losses to Sevilla and Real Madrid that threatened to derail the season early. Although you don’t win the league early in the season, you can absolutely lose it.

Thankfully, Barça did what contenders do, and they fought back instead of hanging their heads low. An eight-game winning streak in La Liga flipped the narrative, pushed them past Madrid, and put them where they belong, as league leaders.

Right now, Barça look like a team that has found its mojo again. Although the concerns about the high press continue to linger, the team seems to have health, and momentum in their favor. Currently, the entire squad is almost healthy. Furthermore, the intensity is there, the legs are fresher, and the football seems to have a purpose.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid are wobbling. Performances have lacked authority, and they seem a couple of bad results away from unraveling with their manager’s future questioned. The recent Mbappé injury only tilts the balance further in Barça’s favor. Momentum in football is fragile, and this is the moment for Barça to take advantage and take charge.

Barça open the new year away at Espanyol in the Derbi Barceloní. These games are never simple, and Espanyol have been solid this season. That’s exactly why it’s the perfect test. A chance to set the tone for the second half of the campaign.

Barça are to compete for La Liga, Copa Del Rey, Super Copa and the UEFA Champions League in the next few months.  It’s time to get the results to put more pressure on Real Madrid and other rivals. Playing back at the Camp Nou, even if at half capacity, still an advantage. However, there has to be an emphasis on rotating the players to keep them fresh, especially Lamine Yamal who has to be taken care of and not stretched thin by club and country. The 18-year-old Lamine Yamal is a rising star who finished as the runner up for the title of the best player in the world. His a phenom whose talent is undeniable but whose long-term health is non-negotiable. Brilliance means nothing if it burns out too soon. In order for Barça to have another successful season, the likes of Lamine Yamal, Pedri, Raphinha, Cubarsi and others have to be properly taken care of when it comes to minutes played. 

Barça’s Big Reality Check.

 

Barça’s season suffered a big reality check after their 2-1 loss away to Real Madrid. This result confirmed that Barça are nowhere near as good as they were last season. Their results have been disappointing and at times lucky. There is a strike contrast between last season and this season, and unless things change, expectations for success should be low.

El Clasico is the game of the century, even if it might be played a few times a season. This past Sunday was a litmus test to see how good Madrid are, and also how good Barça truly are. However, this test was to be a difficult one with all of the injured players missing this clash. What wasn’t needed was the bulletin board material from Lamine Yamal to provoke the Blaugrana’s archrivals.

Lamine Yamal went on a show, with Barça legend Pique being a part of, before the big game, and made a throwaway comment that the Madrid media made a bigger deal out of it. Supposedly, that comment also became locker-room fuel for Madrid. In a big game, it’s best to do your talking on the pitch. A lesson learned by the young star but what was more disappointing was how no one from the club, or Lamine’s agent would have advised against appearing on any program before the big match. Moreover, one would expect Pique to think that an appearance by Lamine on his show before a big game would not be a great idea, but then again, Pique is also known for making many blunders.

Barca’s loss to Madrid was not surprising based on their performance. They were not the better side in the first half and only played better in the second half, after Madrid’s level of performance dropped. The starting lineup and tactics by Hansi Flick were wrong, and it didn’t help that he could be pitch side because of his suspension from last week’s sending off.

Players were flat and Flick’s insistence on playing with a high line — a tactic that has been exposed repeatedly this season by lesser teams, hindered their performance. Madrid’s plan to press high worked with Barça being forced into errors, yet the team continued to play out from the back. Barça needed to go long, relieve the pressure, and fight for second balls. Instead, they played straight into the trap.

It is never easy to win when you are missing key starters, but every team has to deal with that problem. A major disappointment this season has been the lack of fitness and the number of injuries, which is quite a contrast from last season. Last season, Barça hired Julio Tous as head of fitness training and he was praised to the high heavens on how this team was so intense and running hard. Fast forward to today and the spark is gone, so what has changed?

Barça didn’t spend the summer playing in the FIFA Club World Cup like Real Madrid. However, the Blaugrana somehow looked exhausted. Meanwhile, Madrid, with more minutes and travel in their legs, looked fresher, faster, and hungrier. Injuries have taken a toll but some players have also

failed to deliver this season.

In a big clash as this one, Barça seemed passive and more of a finesse team, while Madrid seemed gritty and determined to run like hell. Madrid’s energy died down in the second half but Barça couldn’t raise their intensity and capitalize on it. Koundé in particular appears sluggish, without a spark. Defensively he has been ho-hum but offensively, he has been a nonfactor. His wasted scoring chance in the second was deflating to the team and the fans.

We can discuss the bad officiating but that is a weak excuse. There is something deeply wrong with this club. Players look off the pace, they concede too many scoring chances, and they are not effective when they possess the ball. Hansi Flick has to make the correct adjustments, and hopefully things will improve when he has everyone back healthy, However, it was just announced that Pedri is now injured, and he was the standout player this season. Time is running out and although you don’t win the league title in October, you can just as well lose it.

Lady Luck Smiles on Barça.

After months of battling adversity, FC Barcelona have reclaimed what belonged to them; top of La Liga. Prior to the New Year, with rivals Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid breathing down Barça’s necks, it seemed Lady Luck was nowhere to be found. However, after a series of nail-biting encounters, fortunate breaks, and sheer resilience, it appears Lady Luck was smiling as Barça are in pole position for domestic and possible European glory once again.

This current season under Hansi Flick has been anything but boring. After 11 matches, the Blaugrana enjoyed a 6-point lead over Real Madrid and a 10-point lead over Atlético Madrid. Six matches later, Barça’s lead all but evaporated and were in third place in La Liga standings, with a soul crushing 2-1 loss at home to Atlético before the winter break. However, Barça are back as La Liga leaders, ahead of Real Madrid because of a tiebreaker and four points ahead of Atlético Madrid.

Lady Luck smiled on Barça as Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid squandered an eight point and six-point lead respectively, allowing the Blaugrana to capitalize and reclaim the league’s top spot. With eleven rounds to the end of the competition, Barça control their destiny again.

Lady Luck also continued to favor Barcelona in the Champions League. Barça finished second in the League Stage, with late wins against Borussia Dortmund and then the last second winner in the penultimate match against Benfica where they managed to overcome a 4-2 lead by scoring three times in the final 22 minutes. Their luck carried with the knockout stages draw where Barça avoided a clash against Paris Saint-Germain and other European heavyweights and instead landed a more manageable path with rematches against Benfica in the Round of 16 and then Borussia Dortmund in the Quarterfinals and then either Bayern Munich or Inter Milan looming in the Semi-Finals.

Thankfully, the rematch with Benfica was not as insane as their last encounter. Barça survived a Cubarsi red card early in the match that put them at a serious disadvantage in Portugal. However, the Blaugrana dug deep and withstood relentless pressure from the Portuguese side, Lady Luck smiled again when Raphinha scored at the hour mark from outside the box, with a bit of help from a slight deflection, and Wojciech Szczesny putting in a brilliant performance. The return leg was drama free as Barça won the second leg comfortably 3-1 and now await Borussia Dortmund in the Quarterfinals.

Lady Luck continued to smile on the Blaugrana during the Copa del Rey Semi-Finals.  In a wild encounter, Barça found themselves down 2-0 after just six minutes. However, they did not hang their heads down and instead battled back and scored four unanswered goals. It was then Atlético’s turn to have Lady Luck shine on them when they scored twice to force a draw with all to play for in the second leg in the capital.

Barcelona’s fighting spirit shone through in that game and the recent match away to Atlético where they found themselves down 2-0 again with 20 minutes to go courtesy of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres. Once again, Barça refused to play and scored twice to pull level with Atlético before Lady Luck smiled when Lamine Yamal’s effort took a wicked deflection to take the lead in stoppage time. Ferran Torres then scored the fourth and final goal of the game that also gave them the head-to-head tie breaker against Atlético.

Unfortunately, Lady Luck can’t always be there. Casado and Cubarsi are already injured and one can only hope that there won’t be any more injuries, especially with La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Champions League still up for grabs. With a couple of months to go before the end of the season, we shall see if Lady Luck will continue to smile on the Blaugrana.

Barça starts 2025 with a bang and with doubts.

FC Barcelona has kicked off 2025 with a series of impressive results. The Blaugrana are unbeaten so far this year and have secured significant victories over Athletic, Real Madrid and Benfica. However, there are doubts about this team moving forward in different positions.

Barça may have ended 2024 in disappointing fashion, but 2025 have seen them excel as they to challenge for all three trophies this year after already capturing the Spanish Super Cup. Unbeaten in eight matches stretched between four different competitions, it seems that Barça may have found their grove back. Barça gave us an unforgettable commanding 5-2 win over Real Madrid in the Spanish Supercopa final and an exhilarating come from behind 4-5 victory in Portugal over Benfica in the Champions League. Barça finished second in their Champions League group and will enjoy a bye in the knockout stages.

The attacking duo of Raphinha and Lamine Yamal has been instrumental in Barcelona's recent success. Their synergy and creativity have consistently troubled opposition defenses, contributing crucial goals and assists. Midfielder Pedri is enjoying being the maestro orchestrating play with precision, dictating the tempo and linking defense with attack seamlessly, and it’s great to see the scrappy Gavi back in action. Even Frenkie de Jong has put in some decent performances recently which is a plus for the midfield. Defensively, Jules Koundé, Pau Cubarsí, and Alejandro Balde have formed a formidable backline. Their performances have been pivotal in maintaining the team's defensive stability.

However, not all is well for the Blaugrana as there are lingering questions for Hansi Flick. Despite the positive outcomes, manager Hansi Flick still has a 7-point mountain to climb in the league standings. Furthermore, he has some difficult decisions to make regarding some of the players.

The first issue that Flick must deal with is the goalkeeper dilemma. The choice of the starting goalkeeper remains uncertain, as both Wojciech Szczęsny and Iñaki Peña have exhibited inconsistencies. Flick will have to get it right in who will command the goal the rest of the way.

Another area of concern is the defensive partnership in the center of the back four. After Iñigo Martínez went down with an injury, Flick was able to call up Ronald Araújo to fill in. However, who will Flick select when Martinez, Araújo and Christiansen are all fit to be the ideal partner for Pau Cubarsí in central defense. It is remarkable that the teenager Cubarsi is the sure bet while the other three have their flaws and injury history. Will Flick rotate partners or settle on one of the three to strengthen the backline.

The final concern is what Robert Lewandowski’s role will be during the second half of the season.  The veteran striker’s position in the starting lineup is under scrutiny and he usually disappears in the second half of the season. It doesn’t help that the Blaugrana seem to score more when he is not in the starting lineup. Flick will have to assess whether to continue with Lewandowski as a starter or perhaps utilize him as an impactful substitute, a super sup much akin to Henrik Larsson’s role in the past, and go with Ferran Torres up front or rely on a false 9 as a way to optimize the team's dangerous attack.

As Barcelona battles on all three fronts in the next few months, Flick’s decision about these areas will be essential for sustaining the Blaugrana’s momentum and achieving their objectives. The team's depth and talent provide a solid foundation, However, clarity in these areas will be pivotal for continued success.

Frenkie de Jong – The Barça Grinch

Frenkie de Jong arrived at FC Barcelona with much fanfare in 2019. His signing, after dazzling the footballing world with Ajax, was heralded as the next Barcelona midfield maestro. Yet, just a few years later, the narrative has shifted dramatically. From the next big thing, Frenkie has become a high-paid villain raising the ire of the fans. He has become the Barça Grinch.

Back in 2019, Frenkie de Jong’s potential was undeniable. His performances in midfield for Ajax showcased a superb ability to dictate play, break lines with precision passes and also carry the ball with grace under pressure. Expectations were sky-high for de Jong at the club and international level. When FC Barcelona won his signature, his arrival was viewed as the successor to Barça legend Sergio Busquets where he could become a linchpin for the team’s return to its glory days. As a longtime Barça fan, I was exhilarated that Frenkie was going to play for my beloved Blaugrana.

Action speaks louder than words. Well, Frenkie’s performances on the pitch have been inconsistent in the past few seasons. He has struggled to consistently leave his mark on the pitch, with the occasional moments of brilliance, has failed to resonate with fans who were counting on him to influence games. Ultimately, Frenkie hasn’t delivered enough for a player of his caliber.

The excuse of having played under different managers is valid but weak. The argument has been raised that he is playing out of position but he failed to impress to replace Busquets, during and after the legendary midfielder’s departure. The fact that two youth academy players, 17-year-old Marc Bernal and the now 21-year-old Marc Casado were ahead of him in the pecking order didn’t help matters. Under current manager Hansi Flick, Frenkie is not considered the starter even though he is the current captain of the team.

His return from injury kicked off with a superb cameo performance against Real Madrid alongside Marc Casado. However, that sprinkle of magic was soon forgotten following his dreadful performances that coincided with Barça’s poor performances that saw them concede their spot atop the league standings. As a second half substitute, who came on at the hour mark away to Real Betis, Frenkie conceded a penalty and was dreadful the remainder of the match. The final insult was Barça’s big clash against Atletico Madrid at home prior to the winter break. Frenkie did not start ahead of Marc Casado, and when Hansi Flick subbed off Casado in the 80^th minute in a 1-1; Frenkie remained on the bench while much maligned center back Eric Garcia got the nod. Barça ended up losing the match 1-2 and Frenkie never got on the pitch. In fact, he also didn’t feature in Barça’s prior game against Leganes who are fighting for survival.

Although Frenkie de Jong may still be deemed an important asset for the Oranje, the same can’t be said for his current club. At the moment, he is the Barça Grinch. Fans always look for a scapegoat or a whipping boy, to aim their hatred at, and right now, Frenkie is ahead of the pack of the least popular Barça player. Hopefully, Frenkie de Jong will return to the promise he once held. After all, if the Grinch was able to redeem himself, then maybe, just maybe, Frenkie’s best days with the Blaugrana are yet to come. If not, perhaps he can redeem himself by finding a new club in January.

All Hail Raphinha.

The Blaugrana Faithful are enjoying this great start by their beloved Barça. With a new manager, and a young star blossoming in front of our eyes, hopes were high. Barça’s great start to the season has been a wonderful surprise, but the bigger surprise has to be the player leading the charge when most expected him gone; Raphinha.

Barça fans were enthusiastic about the upcoming 2024-2025 season. Hansi Flick was hired to be the man in charge. Lamine Yamal was coming off winning Euro 2024 with Spain where he was voted Young Player of the Tournament, and Barça signed former youth player Dani Olmo, who shined at Euro 2024. Barça fans were also enthusiastic about the possibility of the signing of another key player from that triumphant Spanish side, Nico Williams at the expense of Raphinha being sold to another club.

Fast forward to today, and all the enthusiasm has been rewarded with Barça being league leaders and doing well in the Champions League. The Nico Williams transfer never went through, but thankfully Raphinha has not made us think of Nico once. So far this season, in just 12 matches in La Liga and Champions League, Raphinha has scored 9 goals and has 6 assists.

Raphinha could have easily sulked and complained about his situation and future at the club. Instead, he has been very professional and it had to be noticed by his teammates when they voted him to be one of the captains of the team. Raphinha has been sensational and will be wearing the captain’s armband in El Clasico at Madrid. If Raphinha continues to shine like this, it won’t be long before we start comparing him with other Brazilian Barça legends such as Romario, Ronaldo, Rivado, Ronaldinho and Neymar.

Damaged Barça hire damaged Hansi Flick.

 

With Xavi’s tenure as Barça coming to an unfortunate end, President Joan Laporta already made his choice on who should be Xavi’s successor, by hiring Hansi Flick. It was a marriage of convenience between the club and manager; A damaged club hiring a damaged Hansi Flick.

It was the worst kept secret that Laporta was looking to hire a German manager to run our beloved Blaugrana. Laporta just missed out on Hansi Flick in 2021 before hiring Xavi to manage Barça. Lady luck shined on Laporta when Hansi Flick was now available to take the job following Germany’s disastrous performance at the 2022 World Cup and subsequent matches. Flick’s stock was absolutely at an all-time low and Barça was in need of a manager to get them back among the elite clubs in Europe.

This is not uncommon ground for FC Barcelona. Barça has a storied history of willing to gamble on managers whose philosophies align with the club's philosophy, even if their previous experiences were not always successful. One notable example is Frank Rijkaard, who took over as FC Barcelona's manager in the summer of 2003. Before joining Barça, Rijkaard had been let go at Sparta Rotterdam after they were relegated in his lone season there in 2002. Even though his managerial career consisted of being the Netherlands national team manager from 1998 to 2000 along with his only stint at club level with Sparta Rotterdam, he guided Barça to resurgence. The Blaugrana won two La Liga titles and their second UEFA Champions League in 2006.

The man who guided Barça’s Dream Team, Johan Cruyff, to their first Champions League crown also came to the club with a somewhat damaged reputation as a manager. Although Ajax won two Dutch cups and the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup during the mid to late 80s, Cruyff was unable to steer Ajax Amsterdam to a Dutch league title and subsequently resigned in January 1988 as Ajax struggled. A few months later, Barça hired the football legend and the rest, as they say, is history. Cruyff’s arrival ushered in a successful era for the Blaugrana where he implemented his groundbreaking "Total Football" philosophy at Barcelona, which revolutionized the club's style of play and laid the groundwork for its future success.

                         

Luis Enrique is another prime example of a manager whose managerial career before Barcelona was not spectacular and somewhat damaged. He lasted one season coaching Roma without winning any major trophies. However, after taking over as Barcelona manager in 2014, Luis Enrique led the club to an unprecedented treble in his first season, capturing La Liga, Copa del Rey, and the Champions League, and amassed a total of nine trophies in his three seasons at the club.

                          

However, not all damaged managers have been successful after taking the reins at Barcelona. One noteworthy example would be Louis van Gaal. When van Gaal was first hired by the club in 1997, he was considered one of the top managers in the world following his accomplishments with Ajax. His first stint as Barça manager saw the club win consecutive league titles but failed in Europe. However, when he was hired by Barça again in 2002, it was fresh from his unsuccessful stint as the Netherlands manager who failed to qualify for the World Cup. The second era of van Gaal with the Blaugrana lasted a few months before he was fired due to the club’s woeful league position. Then there is Quique Setién, who joined Barcelona midway through the 2019-2020 season without much of a successful reputation. He had been hired after leaving Real Betis where they regressed from 6th to 10th in the league standings, and he tried his best to showcase his commitment to the Blaugrana's possession-based style of football. However, Setién only lasted a few months without winning any major silverware and will forever be remembered as the manager in charge during that 8-2 defeat to Hansi Flick’s Bayern Munich side in the 2020 Champions League Quarter-Finals.

                          

Barça has a history of hiring managers based on their potential to align with the club's footballing philosophy and their ability to meet the high expectations of both the club and its fans. Hansi Flick’s hiring is a slight deviation from Barça’s DNA, where the hope is he will mutate that DNA with the German football DNA to create a new successful formula for success. Hopefully his hiring will usher in a new successful era for the Blaugrana, and thereby end years of frustration in Europe while also navigating the club to more success in domestic competitions. 

What’s Barça’s Next Step?

Barça will end this season trophyless and there’s still uncertainty about where this club is heading. Is there an actual long-term plan or just more last-minute decisions? Some clarity would be nice so fans can be ready for either success or more agony for the near future.

FC Barcelona’s 2023-2024 season has been a disappointment. What began as a season full of hope and promise is now ending with doubt and dissatisfaction about the club and its direction. Barça and Xavi winning La Liga last season was a remarkable achievement and many felt that the club was heading in the right direction. Unfortunately, the club took one step forward by finally advancing to the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League, but it also took a few steps back as they suffered domestically. Madrid won the league title while defeating the Blaugrana in both league games and the Blaugrana failed to win either the Copa del Rey or the Supercopa. Perhaps Barça made the mistake of thinking that success would repeat itself and maybe underestimated how much better Madrid and other La Liga clubs would be this season.

FC Barcelona is a club in need of stability and a long-term plan, yet this club still appears to be operating on a day-to-day basis. Xavi was supposed to leave, and now he’s staying to manage the team again before he leaves when his contract expires next season.  Will players listen to him when they know he is leaving? How can the club plan for the future when they will be transitioning from Xavi to another manager? Do you sign the players that Xavi wants or save that money for the future manager? Do you also get rid of players Xavi doesn’t want, like Vitor Roque, or does President Joan Laporta let the next manager make those decisions?

Laporta has to inform the Blaugrana faithful of his plans going forward. Does he already have Xavi’s replacement in mind, or will it be a last-minute decision? Can this club sign players and get them registered in time while they juggle the financial requirements of La Liga? The financial situation of this club would scare off anyone interested in coaching this team. With the emergence of Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi, perhaps there should be more faith in the youth and not waste money on expensive signings. For example, Ferran Torres cost Barça €55 million while Ferran Jugtla was sold for €5 million. Ferran Torres has scored 25 goals at his time with the club while the latter has scored 26 goals in Belgium. Was it worth it?

Furthermore, we have seen different directors and advisors leave the club during the second era of Laporta. This doesn’t paint a good picture of stability. Until the Super League becomes a reality, the focus should be on a proper structure and not dreams of a financial windfall from a nonexistent league. It’s time for the club to adopt a clear plan going forward and not continue in this path of uncertainty.

 

Barça End 2023 With Inconsistency.

 

2023 is coming to an end and the one word that best describes FC Barcelona during this calendar year would be inconsistent. The highs and lows, on the field and off the field, by the Blaugrana was still rewarding enough to witness the club become league champions again. Will 2024 be any different?

Barça kicked off 2023 with a bang following their impressive success of capturing the Supercopa de España in Saudi Arabia. From that moment, the tide had shifted for Xavi and his players as they enjoyed a memorable second half of the season in La Liga en route to winning their 27^th league crown. Their elimination in the Copa del Rey by Real Madrid did sting but there were high hopes for the upcoming 2023-2024 season.

The summer was full of uncertainty regarding who was coming and leaving the club, players and sporting directors. Eventually, the club did well in the transfer window, but the club’s league form was shaky. After 18 matches, the Blaugrana find themselves in 4^th place, 7 points behind league leaders Real Madrid. However, the club did finally manage to overcome their past struggles of advancing from the Champions League group stages.

2023 can be best described as a yo-yo season or a roller coaster season for the Blaugrana; full of ups and downs. Injuries and some bad coaching decisions by Xavi have played a role in the club’s inconsistency, but interference from the board about who plays, and the manager’s future is not helping either. Certain players not delivering are also to blame for the inconsistency.

Here’s hoping Barça will usher in the new year with vast improvement on and off the pitch for the club. Vitor Roque will be a new face for the Blaugrana faithful, and hopefully they will be patient with the Brazilian starlet as he adjusts to a new club, a new league and a new continent. It all kicks off on January 4^th, 2024, when Barca travel to the Canary Islands to face Las Palmas. We shall see if this will be a start to a beautiful year.

Barça’s First Test of the Season .

 

Barça is off to a great start to their season. Following their surprising goalless draw at home to Rayo Vallecano, the Blaugrana have been on a five-game winning streak with impressive wins on the road against Real Sociedad and Sevilla. Today, they kick off their second group stage match of their Champions League group stage, where they face their rivals for the trophy, Bayern Munich. Today will show us if Barça are back where they belong or still have work to do.

Barça are flying under Xavi. 4 wins and a draw to kick off their new league campaign and top of their Champions League group stage, on goal differential, after one match day while playing entertaining football (15 goals in La Liga and 5 goals in Europe) while conceding only one goal in each competition. It’s true that Real Sociedad and Sevilla are off to a poor start, but those grounds are usually a tough trip for the Blaugrana. Nonetheless, Xavi’s boys went there and got impressive victories there.

The Blaugrana are flying high with the new additions of Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, Jules Koundé, Andreas Christensen, Héctor Bellerín, and Marcos Alonso. However, today Barça get their first true test of the season when they face Bayern Munich. The German side has been a thorn in Barcelona’s side for the past few seasons. Yesterday, Xavi said Allianz Arena wasn’t a house of horror for the Blaugrana. However, their record on Bayern Munich’s turf is horrendous with four losses and two draws on their last six trips with the aggregate score of 14-4 for the home side.

Today is the first true test for Xavi and the players. A loss would not be devastating since this is still a work in progress and it’s still early into the season. However, a win would give the team a bounce in their step and validation for FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta for all the risky financial measures to allow the club to become a powerhouse again. Roma wasn’t built in a day but today could pave the road for the club to become a powerful empire again.

El Clasico Watch Party Special Guest – Barça Legend Patrick Kluivert.

 

This weekend’s El Clasico will be a special one for the Miami Blaugrana Penya. Courtesy of ESPN+, former Blaugrana star Patrick Kluivert will be making an appearance at 77 Sportbar where fans can meet and have their photos taken with the Dutch and Barça legend and with the Spanish league trophy and the official Spanish league ball.

Patrick Kluivert was in Amsterdam Holland where he was an Ajax Amsterdam youth graduate. Kluivert made worldwide headlines when, at the age of 18, he scored the game winner for Ajax in 1995 UEFA Champions League Final against AC Milan. To this day, he is still the youngest goal scorer in Champions League Finals history.

Kluivert joined Milan in 1997 and a year later, he joined FC Barcelona where he would go on to play for the Blaugrana for six seasons. He helped Barça win the league title in 1998 and overall, he would go on to score 122 goals in all competitions for the Blaugrana.

At the time when he joined Barça, Kluivert was a feared striker who also excelled for the Dutch national team who reached the semi-finals of the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 tournaments. He was joint top scorer at Euro 2000 with five goals.

Unfortunately, Kluivert’s time with the club coincided during a horrible time for the club, where success was scarce. Nonetheless, he was also there to usher in the new era of success for Barça. Kluivert was one of the veterans of the 2003-2004, alongside Luis Enrique, Phillip Cocu, and Marc Overmars and the new signings of Ronaldinho, Rafa Marquez and Giovanni van Bronckhorst while the likes of Puyol, Xavi, Iniesta and Víctor Valdés got to blossom and combined helped kickstart an era of success that would soon follow.

Barça had a nightmare start to their 2003-2004 season that saw them lose 1-2 to Real Madrid at the Camp Nou in a league match for the first time in 29 years. Kluivert scored Barça’s lone goal that night. Barça were struggling and were nowhere near the top four in La Liga. However, the wind of changes commenced on January 25, 2004 when Barça defeated Sevilla away 1-0 with Kluivert being the goal scoring hero after scoring a remarkable header goal. The team would go on a 9-game winning streak and ultimately enjoy a 17-game unbeaten league streak during the second half of the season. That streak also featured Barça’s come from behind 2-1 win against Real Madrid in the Spanish capital with Kluivert scoring the equalizer header goal before the current Barça manager, Xavi, scored the game winner.

Barça would come up just short and finish second that season and Kluivert would leave the club and join Newcastle United. However, for those who watched Kluivert play for Barça, we got to see a spectacular speedy striker who was dangerous in the air and with his feet and also was a superb playmaker who assisted the likes of Rivaldo and Luis Enrique. My all-time favorite Barça performance from Patrick Kluivert was in the Blaugrana’s 5-1 extra-time victory over Chelsea in the 1999-2000 Champions League second leg of the Quarterfinals where he struck the woodwork twice, had a goal disallowed after he was fouled inside the box and the referee decided to award a penalty instead, before scoring the club’s fifth goal from another memorable header.

After retiring from the game, Kluivert has coached and was the club’s academy director for the last couple of years. He also features for the Barcelona Legends team. Barça Lost in Transition.

Barça’s transition from the last regime to the new regime under Laporta is off to a horrendous start. Poor performances and results in La Liga and in the Champions league along with the loss of Messi has not made the Blaugrana faithful happy. Things were supposed to improve but instead, things are getting worse with no optimism on the horizon as long as Ronald Koeman remains.

Barça’s elections were supposed to usher in a new era under President Laporta. What we didn’t expect was for Barça to hang on to Koeman and lose Messi. Back in November, I wrote that

Elections can’t come soon enough. The longer Koeman stays in charge, the more hopeless this season feels for the fans, and for the players. A fresh start is needed with a new board and a new manager because the results are not there to save Koeman. Koeman was presented as the solution, but he’s become part of the problem.

Almost a year later, and Koeman continues to be part of the problem. Koeman has an abysmal record in big games while subjecting us to horrible football. Laporta should have fired Koeman during the summer but he did not because firing Koeman would result in Barça having to pay him €12 million. Nonetheless, this is the same club that haven’t paid Koeman’s predecessors Quique Setién and Ernesto Valverde after they were fired. Because money is tight, Laporta stuck with Koeman and informed the fans “Ronald Koeman will continue as Barca coach. We feel he deserves a certain amount of confidence for many reasons.”

Well, nothing has happened that reinforces that confidence or justifies holding on to Koeman as a manager. Barça have been awful in La Liga and the Champions League under Koeman. Last month, Koeman said “Thanks to me, this club has a future.” Well, if he meant an uncertain future, then he has done a marvelous job.

After Laporta won the Barça presidential elections, he promised us things will be different. “Before, if we lost, nothing happened, but with me there are going to be consequences.” Well, the consequences thus far have been that we lost Messi and replaced him with Memphis Depay, Kun Aguero, and Luuk “more dangerous than Neymar inside the box” de Jong. Well, things sure are not different, things are worse and we have yet to see any consequences; just videos from Laporta asking for support from us.

The transition from the rotting decaying Rosell/Bartomeu era to the Laporta era is one mired in confusion and frustration. Are Barça afraid of firing Koeman because of money? That didn’t stop them with Valverde and Setién, so let Koeman get in line and sue. Eventually Barça will be financially settled and can afford to settle those cases out of court. It sure beats hanging on to Koeman and risk early elimination from the Champions League and make it harder for his successor, Xavi or Francisco Javier García Pimienta (whose firing from Barça B is still a puzzling decision) or anyone else, to help this club finish in La Liga’s top four and qualify for the Champions League. There has been enough damage done under Koeman and this transition will never launch if he stays in charge.

Barça’s Difficult Cleanup Underway.

 

Barça’s upcoming season is just around the corner, and the first under new president Joan Laporta with a full summer under his belt. However, anyone thinking that Laporta will bring a quick fix is sadly mistaken. Many, including Laporta, are now fully coming to grips of the dire condition this club is in financially, and that it is in need of a lengthy major cleanup.

Unless you’ve been in a coma for the past few years, it should come as no surprise that Barça is a financial mess. The club is drowning in debt thanks to many bad financial decisions by the previous regime, which is affecting how the club can prepare for the new season. La Liga’s President, Javier Tebas has warned the club that they will not be able to register Messi and the new signings unless they get under their salary cap. This requires shedding a lot of dead weight and bad contracts.

Unfortunately, not every player is on board when it comes to accepting a reduced salary and the pandemic is making is tougher to offload the deadwood. Laporta faced the same situation when he first became president of Barça back in 2003, and it took him a whole season before all the players deemed surplus were gone. This time around, the players he is trying to offload are ridiculously high earners, and some of them are also injury prone. Good luck finding any takers, or suckers, for players such as Umtiti, Coutinho, Griezmann and Pjanic in today’s football world.

Laporta’s first important challenge is cleaning up this toxic mess. He was successful the first time when he had the likes of Ferran Soriano by his side to steady the ship. We shall see if Laporta has surrounded himself with a proper crew to perform this difficult cleanup. However, don’t kid yourself into thinking that this will be a quick fix because this cleanup will take time, and unfortunately, time is not a luxury the fans have.

Barça’s new problem is Koeman.

 

Well, the honeymoon period for Koeman ended last month and it doesn’t appear that the relationship between Koeman and the fans is going to improve anytime soon. The Blaugrana faithful have watched Barça stumble out of the gate thanks to poor performance, results and poor decision making from Koeman. Barça find themselves nine points behind Atletico Madrid with no optimism for a quick turnaround and a season going down the drain.

Yesterday’s loss to Atletico Madrid was Barça’s third loss from their opening eight league matches under Koeman. This equaled the Blaugrana’s their worst start to a league campaign since 1991-1992 season. That Barça team went on to win the league title by only losing three more games the rest of the campaign. Yet, it’s hard to see this current Barça team avoiding more losses under Koeman.

Koeman’s lineups and substitutions have not worked, with his tactics quite predictable and his adjustments are nonexistent. Koeman unjustifiably overlooks 21-year-old Riqui Puig while consistently playing the 17-year-old Pedri and 20-year-old Trincão. Koeman wanted Dest signed, only to keep dropping him for Sergi Roberto. With injuries piling up, it is a concern of what lies ahead. Of course, Koeman is not solely to blame for Barça’s demise. Watching Barça’s expensive signings of Dembele, Coutinho and Griezmann all on the pitch at once is a sad reminder of how Bartomeu has mismanaged the club’s finances and left the club in financial ruins.

Wrong Time for Koeman to coach Barça.

The news that Ronald Koeman was going to become FC Barcelona’s new manager was surprising and disappointing. Koeman ended the Oranje’s ordeal of mediocrity when they qualified for an international tournament for the first time since 2014. This summer was supposed to be the pinnacle of his time with the Oranje, with him stepping down upon the conclusion of Euro 2020 and seeking new challenges. However, the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted his plans, and everyone else’s, and his international competition debut as a manager was put on hold for another year. Furthermore, Koeman suffered a scare when he was recently hospitalized with heart problems, which made 2020 an unusual year for the manager.

For those who were not aware, Ronald Koeman’s nickname during his playing days was Tintin. The popular character from The Adventures of Tintin has been on many adventures, but none will be as daring as Koeman’s new adventure as Barça’s manager for the upcoming season; Tintin in the land of Dumpster Fires. It pains me that Koeman would abandon his post as the Oranje manager to join FC Barcelona, especially when this is the worst time to join Barça.

It seems that Koeman is following his heart, and not his brain in making this decision. It has always been Koeman’s dream to become Barça’s manager. The former Barça player is a legend who was always linked to the Barça job, following his successful tenure as the Oranje manager. However, this is the worst time to join FC Barcelona who is in the midst of a crisis. Koeman is accepting to take over Barça with hardly any time for a proper preseason; the Spanish league kicks off on September 12. He is inheriting an awful squad and because of Barça’s dire financial situation, it is rather doubtful they’ll be making any good signings. Oh, and the team’s starting goalkeeper, Marc-André ter Stegen, will be undergoing knee surgery and could be out three to four months.

Lastly, the club will be having elections in March 2021 for a new president, so his stay in Barcelona could be short-lived if a new president opts to hire his own manager. Koeman’s heart scare probably made him realize that life is too short and he should not pass up the chance to manage his former club. However, this job is not for the weak of heart and perhaps Koeman should think twice before accepting Barça’s offer and keep his word that he will see out his contract with the Oranje. Then again, he may be out of a job before Euro 2020 kicks off next summer and who knows, maybe the Oranje would take him back.

Barça Clause delivering gifts.

Barça Clause is coming to town.

Barça, the club that keeps on gifting to other clubs. Over the years, Barça have become jolly old Saint Nick, by sending gifts in terms of money, blown leads, and points. Three straight seasons where Barça fans felt like they only got coal in their stockings.

Year one of Mister Valverde, Barça almost went unbeaten in league. Paid Liverpool about €160 million for Coutinho, and enjoyed a three-goal aggregate lead against Roma, only to squander it in Rome. It felt like a fluke, but the worst was yet to come.

Year two of Mister Valverde, Barça win the league again. Semi-Finalists once more in Champions League Football. Defeated Liverpool 3-0 at the Camp Nou, only for them to gift that lead and lose 4-0 at Anfield. Coutinho was a non-factor, while Liverpool used the €160 million to sign Virgil van Dijk and Alisson to go on and win their 6^th Champions League title. Proceeded to lose the Copa del Rey Final to Valencia which allowed them to celebrate their first domestic achievement in a decade.

Year three of Mister Valverde, he didn’t make it past January. Setién was now the man, although were dumped out of Copa del Rey by Athletic, and lost El Clasico in Madrid, Barça enjoyed a two-point lead before the pandemic break.  Barça gifted the lead back to Madrid and finished five points behind Los Blancos as runners-up. Champions League is all that’s left with Barça an away goal advantage following their 1-1 draw in Naples. Will they overcome Napoli or gift them a spot in the Quarter-Finals?

Setién’s Honeymoon is Over.

My how quickly we lose our interest in someone we had a crush on. Quique Setién was welcomed into our Blaugrana hearts as new Barça manager with hopes of joy and happy moments. Yet, just a few months after his appointment, it seems that the romance with Setién has faded and this love affair might be short lived.

Setién was the Don Juan of Barça fans who wanted a return to the Cruyff style of play that most love. He whispered lovely romantic words in our ears and won us over with his promises. We fell for it like most fall for those who come over as guests and prepare a magnificent dinner. However, with time, that romantic spell with the fans has eroded and Setién now feels like the lazy significant other whose idea of a romantic dinner is to order pizza and watch TV.

Setién’s future with the club depended on winning the league this season. Thus, any expectations of seeing the rising stars of La Masia, Ansu Fati and Riqui Puig play regularly, were dashed early on with Setién preferring to rely on the old guard and not experiment with the youth. Poor away results ensued that see the Blaugrana occupying second place in the standings behind Real Madrid. He did finally get around to featuring Puig and Fati but it might be a little too late and, in the process, managed to upset not just the fans, but the Barça players as well.

After his hiring, we witnessed the manner in how Setién manages a game along with how he speaks, which as a result, ruffled numerous feathers. The way he spoke of Arthur and his struggles at the club, coupled with other sound bites about not playing the younger players left much to desire. Recently, the video of Messi walking away from Setién’s right hand man, Eder Sarabia, while giving out instructions during a water break in the past weekend’s Celta Vigo 2-2 draw, indicated that there indeed a rift between the players and the manager. After the draw with Celta, Luis Suárez spoke to the media and shifted the blame to Setién by replying “you'll have to ask the coaches, they analyze these situations”.

Supposedly players are unhappy with the demanding training sessions full of intensity, conducted by Sarabia. The players preferred previous manager Ernesto Valverde and his easy-going approach so this new approach is not much to their liking. It’s similar to a classroom who disliked their hard as nails teacher, but enjoyed the laid-back substitute who allowed the students to do whatever they wanted. Well, the substitute teacher is gone and the players are not too happy with new manager and his demanding approach.

Fans are upset. Players are upset. The Barça board are caught in the middle showing yet again their lack of leadership and proper planning with regards to signings and managerial hirings. However, this does not bode well for the players either. Perhaps things would be different if Suárez had not missed that sitter against Sevilla, or had Messi actually had a shot on target during his last two away matches. The team’s away form was woeful under Valverde too, lest we forget how great they looked away in Champions League second legs. So, if two managers can’t succeed in getting the team to play better and win, perhaps it’s not just the managers who are at fault.

Setién was not the first or even second choice to replace Valverde. At the moment, it’s hard to see who would want to coach this club if players tune out their managers unless it’s a big-name manager with a resume full of success. The Lakers of Shaq and Kobe tuned out Del Harris and Kurt Rambis since they were nobodies in the coaching world, yet succeeded when the legendary Phil Jackson was hired. Sadly, Setién is not a legendary coach for the Barça players to listen to, so expect broken hearts when all is said and done.

What will Barça do after Messi’s Last Dance?

ESPN’s The Last Dance miniseries about the one and only Michael Jordan was well received by many when it aired recently. The miniseries discussed Michael Jordan’s career and his final season with the Chicago Bulls. Of course, talk on Barça social media was how much they looked forward to a similar miniseries made about Lionel Messi when his playing days are over. Yet, as much as I look forward to enjoying a miniseries about Messi, I am also concerned of about Barça after Messi’s last dance with the Blaugrana.

The idea of Messi walking away from football struck a nerve last December when Messi addressed the media after winning the Ballon d'Or for a record-breaking sixth time. Messi said, "I'm aware of how old I am. And I enjoy these moments so much because I know that retirement is approaching. Time flies." Barça fans have been under the illusion that Messi was eternal and would play on forever. Yet, that December night woke Barça fans from their stupor and made them realize that nothing lasts forever.

All good things must come to an end, and the day Messi walks off the pitch as a Barça player will be one of the most gut-wrenching days as a fan. Messi has been representing the Blaugrana for almost 20 years, ever since his arrival from Argentina as a young teenager who made his way through La Masia ranks before reaching the first team and becoming a married 32-year-old man who is also a father to three children. Throughout those years, the one constant was Messi representing FC Barcelona. Eventually, we will have to bid farewell to Messi when the wonderful magician walks off the pitch as for the final time as a Barça player. However, is the club ready for when that day arrives?

Since I started following my beloved Blaugrana, I have seen a couple of great eras and great players come and go. The club survived after they sacked Johan Cruyff and survived after Pep Guardiola left the club in 2012. The club survived after Romario, Ronaldo, Rivaldo, and Ronaldinho departed the club. But there is a cause for concern about of FC Barcelona after the departure of Messi.

The Chicago Bulls never tasted success before Michael Jordan’s arrival and have not since his departure. The Bulls allowed their successful coach, Phil Jackson, and Dennis Rodman to walk away while trading Scottie Pippen to Portland. The Bulls began a new era with Toni Kukoč as their best player with the hopes of enticing other players to join their team. However, players ignored the Bulls and their history and opted to join other teams while the Bulls slowly slid into an abyss of failure. Also, the successful Boston Celtics of the 80s paid the price for not having players ready to step in for Larry Bird and Kevin McHale when they retired in the early 90s and would struggle for many years until becoming competitive again. I am concerned that Barça seem to be following in the footsteps of the Bulls and Celtics regarding future planning of the squad at the moment and when Messi retires. Luis Suárez and Gerard Piqué are both 33, and Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba are both 31. While Frenkie de Jong seems to be Busquets’ successor, the club still lacks the necessary successors for those other players, and for Messi as well.

The grand plan of former Barça president, Sandro Rosell, was for Neymar to be Messi’s heir apparent, either after they sold Messi or after Messi left the Blaugrana. However, that plan went down in flames when Neymar opted to join Paris Saint-Germain F.C. in 2017. Barça received quite the windfall, €222 million, from Neymar’s departure to Paris Saint-Germain but the club squandered that fortune on expensive transfers that have failed to deliver. Barça splashed €105 million on Ousmane Dembélé whose bad luck with injuries have frustrated the fans. Coutinho cost €145 million and lasted a season and a half before being sent out on loan. Meanwhile, Liverpool used that €145 million to sign Virgil van Dijk and Alisson and win the Champions League.

While looking ahead to determine what signings Barça need to make, one has to wonder how dire is Barça’s current economic situation when they cannot afford to sign Neymar or Inter’s Lautaro Martínez without selling other players first. They were able to gobble up players before, but now, Barça seem to have tightened the belt across their waist twice. Will they have the financial capability to sign other “Cracks” when Messi leaves or is the financial hole they’ve dug themselves into is far too deep to crawl out from?

We lived through this financial mismanagement under Joan Gaspart’s presidency and it took Joan Laporta a year to clear the club’s deadwood. Elections are next year and will the next Barça president have the funds needed to replace Messi and strengthen the team? Moreover, will the next Barça president be brave or crazy enough to contemplate the thought of selling Messi to recoup the funding needed to pay off the club’s debts and sign new players. Besides Messi, the only players that could warrant a big transfer value are Marc-André ter Stegen, Arthur Melo, Frenkie de Jong and a healthy Ousmane Dembélé.

If Messi walks away, careful planning will be needed to usher in the new Barça project. This club will always rebound but the appropriate decisions need to be made to ensure a smooth transition to life without Messi and not become what Manchester United and A.C. Milan are today. Failure to do so will be catastrophic for this club.
