Barça's Opening Six Matches Packed with History.

 

FC Barcelona’s opening six matches have been packed with history at the beginning of their 2026-2027 campaign. From Lamine Yamal’s record-breaking milestones to Raphina’s climb up the Champions League scoring charts and Hansi Flick’s perfect start.

Barça have won all six of their competitive matches so far under Hansi Flick. That perfect record matches their best ever start to a season, putting Flick’s team level with the club’s historic benchmark. Will they be able to break the record with their seventh consecutive victory against Racing Santander at the Camp Nou?

Meanwhile, Lamine Yamal and Raphinha have set an extraordinary scoring contribution for the Blaugrana. They already combined for 15 goals after six matches this season. Historically, only Barcelona duo to have scored more at this stage were Josep Samitier and Sagi-Barba Piera, who had 16 goals between them after six matches during the 1924-1925 season. Yamal and Raphinha could match or break a record that has stood for more than a century.

As a team, the Blaugrana’s attacking numbers become even more striking. Barça have scored 26 goals in their opening six competitive matches so far. That is the second-highest total in the club’s history after six matches right behind the 1925-1926 team, which had scored 27 goals after their first six matches. One more goal by this current team would equal that historic mark.

History was made when Lamine Yamal became the youngest to don the captain’s armband in FC Barcelona’s history. At just 19 years and 58 days, Lamine Yamal is now the youngest captain in club history. That record was previously held by Bojan Krkic (20 years and 56 days). Another achievement in this player’s young career. Lamine Yamal also became the youngest player representing a La Liga club to score directly from a free-kick in the Champions League. Two amazing feats in one night. It is another extraordinary entry on a résumé that is becoming increasingly difficult to believe.

While Lamine Yamal was making history, Raphinha was busy climbing the goalscoring charts. Raphinha now has 21 Champions League goals for Barcelona and has now moved into the top five goal scorers in the club’s history in the Champions League. His 21 goals put him in great company with other Barça legends.

The players ahead of Raphinha are:

• Lionel Messi: 120 goals
• Rivaldo: 25 goals
• Luis Suárez: 25 goals
• Robert Lewandowski: 23 goals
• Raphinha: 21 goals

Raphinha has equaled Neymar’s Barcelona Champions League goal tally, doing so in six fewer matches. It is possible he could become the second highest goal scorer, behind Lionel Messi, during this season, since only two goals separating him from Lewandowski and four from Rivaldo and Suárez.

The opening six matches have been sensational. One can only wonder what else this team will do with many more games to come.

Barça’s Perfect Start.

 

FC Barcelona kicked off the 2026-2027 season in spectacular fashion. Undefeated after four league matches and currently alone atop of the league standings. They also ended the transfer window with more new signings and haven’t suffered any injuries as they prepare for the Champions League.

FC Barcelona are enjoying a perfect start to the season. They have been great up front and have cut down on conceding goals. After four league matches, the Blaugrana have scored 17 goals and conceded only twice. They are averaging just over four goals a match and have scored five in three of their first four matches. Fans have to be pleased with those types of performances.

Furthermore, there seems to be no World Cup hangover for the players. Newly appointed captain, Raphinha, looks superb after having his World Cup cut short due to injury. Raphinha is the top goal scorer with six goals while Lamine Yamal and Fermín Lopez both have scored four. Cubarsi is continuing his fine World Cup form and Joan Garcia leads the race for the Zamora trophy. New signings Anthony Gordon and Rodri seem to be settling in quite well with this team. It’s refreshing to finally see such good depth on this team.

Speaking of new signings, the Blaugrana managed to sign Gabriel Jesus and Dominik Livaković to complete their busy summer of signings. Sure, Julian Alvarez not joining this team is a bit disappointing but there is enough fire power at the moment. The most important thing is that the club was able to register all these players comfortably, unlike prior seasons.

Barça also discovered their Champions League opponents for the league phase. The Champions League quest kicks off this Wednesday and the Blaugrana will be facing Feyenoord Rotterdam, Galatasaray, Paris Saint-Germain, Aston Villa, Sabah FK, Manchester City, Sporting and Como. Facing the defending champions Paris Saint-Germain will be a good litmus test of how good this Barça team truly is. There will be homecoming for former Barça players who are now club managers with Giovanni van Bronckhorst (Feyenoord) and Cesc (Como).

Here’s hoping the team continues to play great and everyone stays fit. It will be a long season and hopefully Hansi Flick will rotate his players to keep them all healthy and happy with their minutes. The quest for the 30^th league title and 6^th Champions League title should be an interesting one.

Can Barça Continue Their Winning Ways?

 

Another football season of our beloved Blaugrana begins tomorrow. FC Barcelona will be chasing for their third consecutive Spanish league crown. Hansi Flick braces for his third season as the manager of FC Barcelona, with expectations always high for domestic and European success.

Just like every season, there will be new arrivals and departures. Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres have left the club. Ronaldo Araujo and Marc-André ter Stegen are out on loan, and Marcus Rashford’s loan stint did not result in a transfer. Yet, there will be new faces for the club this season. Barça brought in Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi, Rodri, and Jesse Bisiwu as new editions for the Blaugrana. João Cancelo also signed on a free transfer to rejoin Barça for the third time in his career after being on loan twice before.

Following Spain’s successful World Cup, where Spain’s playing style is similar to Barcelona’s. Ball control and heavy possession instead of playing defensive and relying on counter attacks. However, Spain did not press as high as Barcelona do under Flick and conceded fewer scoring chances. Spain only conceded one goals in the entire World Cup where Pau Cubarsi shined. One has to wonder if Flick will follow the blueprint of Luis de la Fuente and rely less on high pressing and avoid watching all these dangerous scoring chances that other teams enjoyed against our Blaugrana.

The other major concern for the upcoming season will be where will the goals come from? Lewandowski and Ferran Torres were the main scoring threat with Rashford scoring a few important goals last season. All three are now gone and the pursuit of Julian Alvarez did not pan out. Will Barça sign someone else before the transfer window closes? Will Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi or Raphina, or Lamine Yamal be the striker? Is the 18-year-old Hamza Abdelkarim ready for the spotlight?

The final concern is whether there will be a World Cup hangover. Will the World Cup affect the players and cause them to have a sluggish start to the season? Flick has done a decent job of using players from La Masia and perhaps he will have to continue to do so this season. Better yet, will he rest the starters and key players from Copa del Rey? Hansi Flick knows that nothing comes easy being the Barça manager and here’s hoping he and the team have another successful season.

The Good, The Bad & The Ugly; Netherlands v Morocco.

Well, the Oranje’s quest for the elusive World Cup continues. Although expectations were low, being eliminated after four matches for the first time since the 2006 World Cup was not expected. Ronald Koeman is gone and the KNVB will have to find someone to lead these players.

Apologies for the delay, but it took some time getting over this loss. I just left Mexico and got home in time to watch the Oranje take on Morocco and be heart broken once again. The economist Joachim Klement had predicted that the Netherlands were going to win the World Cup. Clearly, he never watched the Oranje play under Koeman when he made that prediction. Hope he does better with his day job.

THE GOOD

Not much good to write about after a disappointing frustrating elimination from the World Cup. Crysencio Summerville’s hustle and not giving up by assisting on the opening goal was admirable. Cody Gakpo scoring to give the Oranje the lead, after the tragic news of losing his unborn son, was a positive moment for all. Other than that, the only other good thing was the departure of Ronald Koeman after this result. Hopefully the next manager will do better than Koeman whose record during his second stint was disappointing despite getting to the semifinals of UEFA Euro 2024. Zero wins against top 25 teams during Koeman’s second stint is shambolic.

THE BAD

The mental lapses by the defenders continued to be an issue. The Oranje had the lead and just needed to set up shop and protect the lead. However, they failed to show that they learned from their opener against Japan and conceded late yet again. Captain flatfoot, Virgil van Dijk failed to hop and head the ball and Morocco equalized in stoppage time. As the saying goes, “Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it”. Speaking of history, the Oranje now have the distinction of being the first nation to be eliminated in a World Cup Final, Semi-Final, Quarter-Final, Round of 16 and now, the Round of 32.

Along with the stoppage time brain fart, those penalties were bad. I am not a fan of this trend of slow stepping, tap dancing penalty taking approach. Why not enjoy a Stroopwafel with a sip of coffee before you complete the penalty. Just run and blast the ball in, which Ronaldo Koeman was famous for. You would expect him to drill that into his players. Instead, we got to witness that spectacle. Justin Kluivert scored three penalties in one match for his club, but saw his effort strike the post and it was hard not to feel deflated. It was also hard not to be reminded of his father Patrick Kluivert missing his penalty against Italy in Euro 2000.

THE UGLY

Penalty Shootouts are horrible because someone ends up being the villain. Not this time! There were many villains to choose from after this performance. From Koeman and his coaching to Virgil and his brain fart and those three poorly taken penalties. The overall performance was just ugly. Cowardly football tactics from Ronald Koeman where the Oranje surrendered possession to Morocco in an elimination game. They had 30% possession against Morocco. 30%!!! Scotland had 40% of possession against Morocco and the mighty Dutch could not best that. To call this performance shameful is putting it mildly. Koeman had one bright moment in this whole game, which was bringing on Wout Weghorst and to play long balls to him. It worked when it resulted in Gakpo’s goal. Other than that, Koeman lacked any positive ideas to go with that awful back five idea.

Playing for penalties was a bad strategy. Sure, you look like a genius when it works. However, when it doesn’t work, it leads to more second guessing and afterwards, Koeman said he would not have changed a thing if he could do it again. Of course, the fact that the Netherlands have a poor record in shootouts, only winning two of out their ten shootouts, is another reason to second guess Koeman. The Oranje have been eliminated in a World Cup by a penalty shootout in 1998, 2014, 2022 and now, 2026.

The Koeman era is over and now, the KNVB president Frank Paauw and KNVB Technical Director Nigel de Jong will have to choose Koeman’s successor. They need to show ambition and not just settle for who is Dutch and is available. Aim higher. Pep Guardiola is available, so why not approach him? Unfortunately, we will expect them to decide between the available Arne Slot or Erik ten Hag. It’s as predictable as watching the Oranje play the past few years.

Hopefully, these competitions will help this nation prepare them to finally end their quest for the World Cup.

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly; Holland 3-1 Tunisia.

Greetings from Mexico City again. The Oranje wrapped up the group stage with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Tunisia to win their Group. Ending the group stage with back-to-back wins was great as they get ready for the knockout stages.

THE GOOD

No one can complain about slow starts concerning this Oranje team. It took the Oranje just seventeen minutes to be up 2-0 against Sweden. For an encore, it only took them seven minutes to go up 2-0 against Tunisia. Tunisia gifted the Oranje with an own goal courtesy of Skhiri in the third minute. Brian Brobbey then scored his third goal of the World Cup four minutes later. Perhaps Brobbey is answer to the prayers for a striker that the Oranje has sorely missed. His fine performances ensure that Weghorst and Depay are not the starting choice up front.

The Oranje concluded the group stage with ten goals and conceding four goals. Five different players scoring in three matchs is a welcomed sight. Another welcomed sight was seeing Justin Kluivert get his World Cup debut, and to remind us how time flies. It was nearly thirty years ago when Kluivert featured for the Oranje in the 1998 World Cup. It’s a nice way of bringing the past to the present involving father and son Oranje players. The last time this occurred was in 2014 with Daley Blind representing the Oranje after his father, Danny Blind, represented the Oranje in the 90s, as an unused substitute in both 1990 and 1994 World Cups, but he did feature in Euro 92 and 96.

THE BAD

Well, besides being told that the FIFA Fan Fest in Polanco, Mexico City was going to show the Holland Tunisia, and then ended up showing Japan v Sweden instead, so I had to watch the match at a Hooters, there were some negatives. Conceding a goal against the woeful Tunisian team is a minor complaint, but it was also not a ringing endorsement on the performance of the backline. That goal will serve as a reminder that this defense is still vulnerable. The Oranje failed to keep a clean sheet in all three group stage matches, and that should give something Koeman to work on and make the players know there’s still work to be done.

Furthermore, failing to score more goals after such a quick start was a bit disappointing. We got spoiled when we saw the Oranje score five times against Sweden, and a route seemed on the horizon against the hapless Tunisians. It doesn’t happen often that the Oranje blowout teams at the World Cup. The first route was a 4-1 victory over Bulgaria followed by a 4-0 victory against Argentina in 1974, a 5-1 victory against Austria in 1978, a 5-0 victory against South Korea in 1998, and a 5-1 victory against Spain in 2014. What matters is the win and the three points, but this was a wasted chance for players to score more goals and also entertain their fans.

THE UGLY

The Netherlands win Group F and what is their reward? A Round of 32 clash against Morocco. Talk about the luck of the draw. Other group winners such as Argentina got Cape Verde and England got Congo. Yet, the Oranje got Morocco who are one of the best teams from Africa, and semi-finalists from the last World Cup. That should be enough for the Oranje to not underestimate the Moroccans and take them seriously. If the Oranje advance, they then will face Canada. Hopefully Koeman and the leaders make sure that they do not look ahead to Canada

Unfortunately, the fact the Round of 32 match is to be played in Monterrey, Mexico is another disadvantage for the Oranje. Mexicans have not gotten over about the Arjen Robben penalty call during their Round of 16 elimination at the 2014 World Cup. The defeat resulted in the popular chant “¡No era penal!” (It wasn’t a penalty) based on the Robben penalty that still stings to this day with El Tri fans. Hopefully the Oranje faithful will pack the stadium in Monterrey and be loud, since it seems unlikely that home fans in attendance will be neutral during the match.  

The Good, the Bad & The Ugly: Netherlands v Sweden.

Greetings from Mexico City. The Oranje are back at the World Cup for the 12^th time. Well, after the bitter 2-2 draw against Japan which felt more like a defeat, the Oranje rebounded with a strong performance in a 5-1 victory over Sweden. They ensured qualification in the knockout stages and continue their impressive unbeaten streaks in both group stages and last actual loss in regulation.

THE GOOD

If Koeman is going to be blamed for the poor decisions that cost the Oranje against Japan, then he deserves the praise for getting things right against Sweden. The idea to start Brian Brobbey up front paid off when the young striker muscled his way to score the opener just after six minutes. Brobbey continued to have his way with the Swedish back four. Cody Gakpo was the star at the last World Cup and he continued his fine performance with a brace and an assist against Sweden.

Just like Gakpo was the rising star of the team back in 2022, this time Crysencio Summerville is the one who has shined with goals in the first two matches of this World Cup. Once again, the Oranje will be participating in the knockout stages yet again. The Oranje have never failed to make it out of the group stages in every World Cup appearance since 1974 (The 1930 and 1934 World Cups had no group stages; just knock-out stages). Furthermore, their last loss in regulation time was almost 20 years ago, when they lost, in the Battle of Nuremberg, against Portugal at the 2006 World Cup in Germany. The last time the Dutch had lost in the group stages at the World Cup was when the tournament was held in the United States back in 1994. The Oranje lost 1-0 to Belgium in sunny Orlando, Florida.

THE BAD

It’s hard to criticize a team when they score five goals but there are still doubts on the back four. They conceded twice against Japan, especially the late equalizer when they had to nail it down for the victory. Perhaps it is easy to lose your focus when leading by many goals, but Elanga’s goal should serve as a warning when the Oranje face stronger opposition. 

The contrast in speed was alarming. Elanga was Sonic the Hedgehog while Virgil van Dijk and company ran in slow-motion. The appearance of a back five was disappointing again. It sends a message of retreat and concedes possession to the opponents. It’s a great plan when the Oranje can strike on the counter, but dreadful if it’s a repeat of the Japan equalizer.

The UGLY

Summerville getting a knee to the head right before the final whistle was an ugly sight and fortunately, he will be fine to face Tunisia. Besides that, those ridiculous ticket prices are an ugly sight. However, those hydration breaks are an ugly reminder of how FIFA is milking this event for every penny. Hydration breaks are understandable when played outdoors under the scorching sun, like when the Oranje faced Brazil in the 1994 World Cup Quarterfinals in Dallas, Texas, where Ronald Koeman was just as orange as those shorts they had worn that day.

However, playing inside an airconditioned domed stadium, just makes the whole hydration break farcical. It won’t be long before we get players getting tequila shots during these breaks. It’s understandable that all teams should be given the same treatment, such as VAR reviews, but the fans, managers and players agree that the hydration breaks are not needed when the situation does not call for it.

Another Tampa Bay Sports Legend Departs.

 

After 12 seasons, Mike Evans has left the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The future NFL Hall of Famer leaves the Bucs as one of the best players not just for the Buccaneers, but the Tampa Bay area. Unfortunately, this continues the trend that this area has seen its legends play elsewhere.

I was disappointed but not surprised when it was announced that Mike Evans was leaving the Bucs. Evans was a legend who ranked fourth in the Top 50 Players in Buccaneers History and will be in the NFL Hall of Fame for his magnificent career. It is disappointing that Evans would not play his entire career as a Tampa Bay Buccaneer like Lee Roy Selmon, Derrick Brooks and Ronde Barber. However, for the Tampa Bay sports fans, it’s expected to see legends play elsewhere.

Just recently, we saw Tampa Bay Lightning legend Steven Stamkos leave the Bolts after 16 seasons and is currently playing for the Nashville Predators. Tampa Bay Rays legend Evan Longoria was traded after 10 seasons although he returned to the Rays to officially retire. Meanwhile, the first great Bucs quarterback Doug Williams, was let go by the Bucs after five seasons where he led them to the playoffs in three seasons. His departure was because the owners were known for being cheap. Another Bucs legends John Lynch was not brought back by the Bucs after an extraordinary 11 seasons and his teammate Warren Sapp was also not brought back after 9 amazing seasons. Both ended up in the NFL Hall of Fame and are also members of the Bucs Ring of Honor along with Doug Williams.

There is no doubt that Mike Evans will also be a member of the Bucs Ring of Honor in the future. His departure was not the result of the Bucs losing faith in his ability to perform at an elite level or that his salary was unwarranted. Mike Evans decided to leave because he believed he could win another Super Bowl. That comment stung many fans with some angry at Evans for leaving and others upset at the Bucs for losing Evans because of the direction the team is heading after failing to get into the playoffs.  

Alongside winning and losing, Tampa Bay fans are also accustomed to seeing legendary players suit up for other teams. Time heals wounds and Tampa Bay fans will ultimately only remember Mike Evans positively just like they remember other legends who left the Bucs, Lightning, and Rays. Legends who helped make our dreams come true will always get a hero’s welcome.

The Final Push for the Lightning.

 With just 15 regular season games remaining, the Tampa Bay Lightning are embarking on another quest to capture the Stanley Cup. At the moment, the Lightning find themselves in a tight race for the Atlantic Division. They currently trail the Buffalo Sabers by four points, despite having played two fewer games which is a crucial advantage as they head into the home stretch. Meanwhile, the Bolts also sit six points behind the Carolina Hurricanes for first place in the Eastern Conference. Six points do not make it out of reach, but every upcoming game is vital if they want to make up the six point deficit in order to grab home ice advantage in the Eastern Conference.

The recent Winter Olympics break could prove beneficial, especially for those players who didn’t participate. For those who stayed behind, it was a chance to rest their bodies and clear their minds. On the flip side, for those who played in the Olympics, one can hope there won’t be a hangover factor after playing high-intensity hockey on an international stage and then returning back action with little or no rest.

As the playoff picture starts to take shape, the players’ health is vital. Whenever a player gets checked hard or leaves the ice hurt, it draws a collective breath from the fans. Now is not the time to lose someone to a long term injury. The difference between a deep playoff run and another early exit often relies to who’s still standing.

The hope is for the Lightning to finish the season strong and get some sort of home ice advantage. Hopefully the Lightning finally break their three-year streak of disappointing first-round exits, and capture their fourth Stanley Cup. The Bolts have been there before. It’s time for them to do it again.

Time for Barça to Take Charge.

After 18 games, FC Barcelona sit four points clear at the top of La Liga. They are La Liga’s Winter Champions, which is a nice label. But the Blaugrana faithful know that Winter Champions don’t get trophies in the trophy cabinet.

Happy New Year everybody. Barça are back in action this Saturday after enjoying a holiday break. They return to action enjoying a nice four-point cushion ahead of their archrival, Real Madrid. After a wobbly October, Barça made amends for those poor losses to Sevilla and Real Madrid that threatened to derail the season early. Although you don’t win the league early in the season, you can absolutely lose it.

Thankfully, Barça did what contenders do, and they fought back instead of hanging their heads low. An eight-game winning streak in La Liga flipped the narrative, pushed them past Madrid, and put them where they belong, as league leaders.

Right now, Barça look like a team that has found its mojo again. Although the concerns about the high press continue to linger, the team seems to have health, and momentum in their favor. Currently, the entire squad is almost healthy. Furthermore, the intensity is there, the legs are fresher, and the football seems to have a purpose.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid are wobbling. Performances have lacked authority, and they seem a couple of bad results away from unraveling with their manager’s future questioned. The recent Mbappé injury only tilts the balance further in Barça’s favor. Momentum in football is fragile, and this is the moment for Barça to take advantage and take charge.

Barça open the new year away at Espanyol in the Derbi Barceloní. These games are never simple, and Espanyol have been solid this season. That’s exactly why it’s the perfect test. A chance to set the tone for the second half of the campaign.

Barça are to compete for La Liga, Copa Del Rey, Super Copa and the UEFA Champions League in the next few months.  It’s time to get the results to put more pressure on Real Madrid and other rivals. Playing back at the Camp Nou, even if at half capacity, still an advantage. However, there has to be an emphasis on rotating the players to keep them fresh, especially Lamine Yamal who has to be taken care of and not stretched thin by club and country. The 18-year-old Lamine Yamal is a rising star who finished as the runner up for the title of the best player in the world. His a phenom whose talent is undeniable but whose long-term health is non-negotiable. Brilliance means nothing if it burns out too soon. In order for Barça to have another successful season, the likes of Lamine Yamal, Pedri, Raphinha, Cubarsi and others have to be properly taken care of when it comes to minutes played. 

The Buccaneers Are a Sinking Ship.

 

Winning is the best deodorant in sports. It covers everything. Win ugly, and nobody cares how it smelled. But the Buccaneers aren’t even doing that anymore. Lately, they’re losing ugly and there’s no masking that.

In prior years, the Bucs would finish the season on a hot streak. However, this season, the Bucs are mired in a four-game losing streak and have dropped seven of its last eight. That’s not a slump. That’s a collapse. Saturday’s game against the Carolina Panthers is a must-win — winner takes the division, unless the Falcons have something to say about it. But even the stakes don’t feel dramatic anymore.

The team is a mess. The offense has actually been alright. It has been productive, but it’s also been careless. Turnovers at the worst time have been the offense’s worst self-inflicted wounds. Perhaps if the Bucs rested Baker Mayfield a few games instead of having him out there getting battered could have prevented some of the turnovers. As for the other side of the line, the defense has been atrocious. They are not dominating teams and without causing turnovers, the defense just is part of the show. All season long, the Bucs have given up big plays and have been guilty of missed assignments and missed tackles. Quite frankly, no one is intimidated when they face the Bucs. For a team built around defense and coached by a defensive-minded head coach, that’s unforgivable. Even the special teams have been team players in also playing poorly. Injuries were an excuse in the past but everyone is back and the team still looks the same.

The interesting factor here is that, for once, many fans won’t even be angry if the Bucs lose and miss the playoffs. Even if Tampa sneaks into the postseason, no one expects them to do anything. Just an early exit and a waste of talent. The fans don’t care and are tired of this team’s direction under head coach Todd Bowles.

Under Todd Bowles, the ceiling is painfully clear.  This ship is sinking, and staying afloat just long enough to delay the inevitable isn’t success; it’s denial. At some point, the Bucs either fix the foundation or stop pretending duct tape is a solution. The Buccaneers don’t need another cosmetic win. They need a new direction, and the longer they wait, the deeper the water gets in this sinking ship.

Bucs Still Look Familiar.

Another year, another déjà vu season for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Midway through the season, the Bucs are now 6-4. We are back to watching the Bucs go through the routine pattern under head coach Todd Bowles.  With seven games to go, will the Bucs finish the season the same way they have the last few seasons under Bowles?

At this point, watching the Bucs under Todd Bowles the last few seasons feels like tuning into an ’80s TV classic — something like Knight Rider or The A-Team. Sure, they are exciting to watch, but after a few seasons, it got repetitive and stale. That’s what Bucs fans are dealing with now. Under Bowles, the Bucs kick off the season in impressive fashion and then go on a losing streak a late-season hot streak to win the division and get to the playoffs.

This year, the Bucs are doing the same thing. The Bucs started the season on a winning note. Sure, it involved last minute heroics by beating teams they should beat. The Bucs were once 6-2 and now they are 6-4 and should they lose to the Rams tonight, they will be 6-5, and on a three-game losing streak.

The team’s inconsistent performances only deepen the frustration. One week, the offense shows up firing while the defense seems lost. The next week, the defense is showing up while the offense struggles to get going.  Obviously, injuries to some key players doesn't help, but one can only hope everyone shows up for the Bucs on game day.

Will this season be another typical Bowles season that started with promise, slipped into the same old rut, with fans now expecting a late surge to win their division and get to the playoffs? Overall, what the Bucs are doing is not a recipe for real success. Until something changes at the top, Tampa Bay fans may be stuck watching the same old show that they have been watching. All we are left with is a cycle that the Bucs can’t seem to break, which is unfortunate since it will be a waste of talent that the Bucs are blessed with.

Barça’s Big Reality Check.

 

Barça’s season suffered a big reality check after their 2-1 loss away to Real Madrid. This result confirmed that Barça are nowhere near as good as they were last season. Their results have been disappointing and at times lucky. There is a strike contrast between last season and this season, and unless things change, expectations for success should be low.

El Clasico is the game of the century, even if it might be played a few times a season. This past Sunday was a litmus test to see how good Madrid are, and also how good Barça truly are. However, this test was to be a difficult one with all of the injured players missing this clash. What wasn’t needed was the bulletin board material from Lamine Yamal to provoke the Blaugrana’s archrivals.

Lamine Yamal went on a show, with Barça legend Pique being a part of, before the big game, and made a throwaway comment that the Madrid media made a bigger deal out of it. Supposedly, that comment also became locker-room fuel for Madrid. In a big game, it’s best to do your talking on the pitch. A lesson learned by the young star but what was more disappointing was how no one from the club, or Lamine’s agent would have advised against appearing on any program before the big match. Moreover, one would expect Pique to think that an appearance by Lamine on his show before a big game would not be a great idea, but then again, Pique is also known for making many blunders.

Barca’s loss to Madrid was not surprising based on their performance. They were not the better side in the first half and only played better in the second half, after Madrid’s level of performance dropped. The starting lineup and tactics by Hansi Flick were wrong, and it didn’t help that he could be pitch side because of his suspension from last week’s sending off.

Players were flat and Flick’s insistence on playing with a high line — a tactic that has been exposed repeatedly this season by lesser teams, hindered their performance. Madrid’s plan to press high worked with Barça being forced into errors, yet the team continued to play out from the back. Barça needed to go long, relieve the pressure, and fight for second balls. Instead, they played straight into the trap.

It is never easy to win when you are missing key starters, but every team has to deal with that problem. A major disappointment this season has been the lack of fitness and the number of injuries, which is quite a contrast from last season. Last season, Barça hired Julio Tous as head of fitness training and he was praised to the high heavens on how this team was so intense and running hard. Fast forward to today and the spark is gone, so what has changed?

Barça didn’t spend the summer playing in the FIFA Club World Cup like Real Madrid. However, the Blaugrana somehow looked exhausted. Meanwhile, Madrid, with more minutes and travel in their legs, looked fresher, faster, and hungrier. Injuries have taken a toll but some players have also

failed to deliver this season.

In a big clash as this one, Barça seemed passive and more of a finesse team, while Madrid seemed gritty and determined to run like hell. Madrid’s energy died down in the second half but Barça couldn’t raise their intensity and capitalize on it. Koundé in particular appears sluggish, without a spark. Defensively he has been ho-hum but offensively, he has been a nonfactor. His wasted scoring chance in the second was deflating to the team and the fans.

We can discuss the bad officiating but that is a weak excuse. There is something deeply wrong with this club. Players look off the pace, they concede too many scoring chances, and they are not effective when they possess the ball. Hansi Flick has to make the correct adjustments, and hopefully things will improve when he has everyone back healthy, However, it was just announced that Pedri is now injured, and he was the standout player this season. Time is running out and although you don’t win the league title in October, you can just as well lose it.

Lady Luck Smiles on Barça.

After months of battling adversity, FC Barcelona have reclaimed what belonged to them; top of La Liga. Prior to the New Year, with rivals Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid breathing down Barça’s necks, it seemed Lady Luck was nowhere to be found. However, after a series of nail-biting encounters, fortunate breaks, and sheer resilience, it appears Lady Luck was smiling as Barça are in pole position for domestic and possible European glory once again.

This current season under Hansi Flick has been anything but boring. After 11 matches, the Blaugrana enjoyed a 6-point lead over Real Madrid and a 10-point lead over Atlético Madrid. Six matches later, Barça’s lead all but evaporated and were in third place in La Liga standings, with a soul crushing 2-1 loss at home to Atlético before the winter break. However, Barça are back as La Liga leaders, ahead of Real Madrid because of a tiebreaker and four points ahead of Atlético Madrid.

Lady Luck smiled on Barça as Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid squandered an eight point and six-point lead respectively, allowing the Blaugrana to capitalize and reclaim the league’s top spot. With eleven rounds to the end of the competition, Barça control their destiny again.

Lady Luck also continued to favor Barcelona in the Champions League. Barça finished second in the League Stage, with late wins against Borussia Dortmund and then the last second winner in the penultimate match against Benfica where they managed to overcome a 4-2 lead by scoring three times in the final 22 minutes. Their luck carried with the knockout stages draw where Barça avoided a clash against Paris Saint-Germain and other European heavyweights and instead landed a more manageable path with rematches against Benfica in the Round of 16 and then Borussia Dortmund in the Quarterfinals and then either Bayern Munich or Inter Milan looming in the Semi-Finals.

Thankfully, the rematch with Benfica was not as insane as their last encounter. Barça survived a Cubarsi red card early in the match that put them at a serious disadvantage in Portugal. However, the Blaugrana dug deep and withstood relentless pressure from the Portuguese side, Lady Luck smiled again when Raphinha scored at the hour mark from outside the box, with a bit of help from a slight deflection, and Wojciech Szczesny putting in a brilliant performance. The return leg was drama free as Barça won the second leg comfortably 3-1 and now await Borussia Dortmund in the Quarterfinals.

Lady Luck continued to smile on the Blaugrana during the Copa del Rey Semi-Finals.  In a wild encounter, Barça found themselves down 2-0 after just six minutes. However, they did not hang their heads down and instead battled back and scored four unanswered goals. It was then Atlético’s turn to have Lady Luck shine on them when they scored twice to force a draw with all to play for in the second leg in the capital.

Barcelona’s fighting spirit shone through in that game and the recent match away to Atlético where they found themselves down 2-0 again with 20 minutes to go courtesy of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres. Once again, Barça refused to play and scored twice to pull level with Atlético before Lady Luck smiled when Lamine Yamal’s effort took a wicked deflection to take the lead in stoppage time. Ferran Torres then scored the fourth and final goal of the game that also gave them the head-to-head tie breaker against Atlético.

Unfortunately, Lady Luck can’t always be there. Casado and Cubarsi are already injured and one can only hope that there won’t be any more injuries, especially with La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Champions League still up for grabs. With a couple of months to go before the end of the season, we shall see if Lady Luck will continue to smile on the Blaugrana.

Barça starts 2025 with a bang and with doubts.

FC Barcelona has kicked off 2025 with a series of impressive results. The Blaugrana are unbeaten so far this year and have secured significant victories over Athletic, Real Madrid and Benfica. However, there are doubts about this team moving forward in different positions.

Barça may have ended 2024 in disappointing fashion, but 2025 have seen them excel as they to challenge for all three trophies this year after already capturing the Spanish Super Cup. Unbeaten in eight matches stretched between four different competitions, it seems that Barça may have found their grove back. Barça gave us an unforgettable commanding 5-2 win over Real Madrid in the Spanish Supercopa final and an exhilarating come from behind 4-5 victory in Portugal over Benfica in the Champions League. Barça finished second in their Champions League group and will enjoy a bye in the knockout stages.

The attacking duo of Raphinha and Lamine Yamal has been instrumental in Barcelona's recent success. Their synergy and creativity have consistently troubled opposition defenses, contributing crucial goals and assists. Midfielder Pedri is enjoying being the maestro orchestrating play with precision, dictating the tempo and linking defense with attack seamlessly, and it’s great to see the scrappy Gavi back in action. Even Frenkie de Jong has put in some decent performances recently which is a plus for the midfield. Defensively, Jules Koundé, Pau Cubarsí, and Alejandro Balde have formed a formidable backline. Their performances have been pivotal in maintaining the team's defensive stability.

However, not all is well for the Blaugrana as there are lingering questions for Hansi Flick. Despite the positive outcomes, manager Hansi Flick still has a 7-point mountain to climb in the league standings. Furthermore, he has some difficult decisions to make regarding some of the players.

The first issue that Flick must deal with is the goalkeeper dilemma. The choice of the starting goalkeeper remains uncertain, as both Wojciech Szczęsny and Iñaki Peña have exhibited inconsistencies. Flick will have to get it right in who will command the goal the rest of the way.

Another area of concern is the defensive partnership in the center of the back four. After Iñigo Martínez went down with an injury, Flick was able to call up Ronald Araújo to fill in. However, who will Flick select when Martinez, Araújo and Christiansen are all fit to be the ideal partner for Pau Cubarsí in central defense. It is remarkable that the teenager Cubarsi is the sure bet while the other three have their flaws and injury history. Will Flick rotate partners or settle on one of the three to strengthen the backline.

The final concern is what Robert Lewandowski’s role will be during the second half of the season.  The veteran striker’s position in the starting lineup is under scrutiny and he usually disappears in the second half of the season. It doesn’t help that the Blaugrana seem to score more when he is not in the starting lineup. Flick will have to assess whether to continue with Lewandowski as a starter or perhaps utilize him as an impactful substitute, a super sup much akin to Henrik Larsson’s role in the past, and go with Ferran Torres up front or rely on a false 9 as a way to optimize the team's dangerous attack.

As Barcelona battles on all three fronts in the next few months, Flick’s decision about these areas will be essential for sustaining the Blaugrana’s momentum and achieving their objectives. The team's depth and talent provide a solid foundation, However, clarity in these areas will be pivotal for continued success.

Frenkie de Jong – The Barça Grinch

Frenkie de Jong arrived at FC Barcelona with much fanfare in 2019. His signing, after dazzling the footballing world with Ajax, was heralded as the next Barcelona midfield maestro. Yet, just a few years later, the narrative has shifted dramatically. From the next big thing, Frenkie has become a high-paid villain raising the ire of the fans. He has become the Barça Grinch.

Back in 2019, Frenkie de Jong’s potential was undeniable. His performances in midfield for Ajax showcased a superb ability to dictate play, break lines with precision passes and also carry the ball with grace under pressure. Expectations were sky-high for de Jong at the club and international level. When FC Barcelona won his signature, his arrival was viewed as the successor to Barça legend Sergio Busquets where he could become a linchpin for the team’s return to its glory days. As a longtime Barça fan, I was exhilarated that Frenkie was going to play for my beloved Blaugrana.

Action speaks louder than words. Well, Frenkie’s performances on the pitch have been inconsistent in the past few seasons. He has struggled to consistently leave his mark on the pitch, with the occasional moments of brilliance, has failed to resonate with fans who were counting on him to influence games. Ultimately, Frenkie hasn’t delivered enough for a player of his caliber.

The excuse of having played under different managers is valid but weak. The argument has been raised that he is playing out of position but he failed to impress to replace Busquets, during and after the legendary midfielder’s departure. The fact that two youth academy players, 17-year-old Marc Bernal and the now 21-year-old Marc Casado were ahead of him in the pecking order didn’t help matters. Under current manager Hansi Flick, Frenkie is not considered the starter even though he is the current captain of the team.

His return from injury kicked off with a superb cameo performance against Real Madrid alongside Marc Casado. However, that sprinkle of magic was soon forgotten following his dreadful performances that coincided with Barça’s poor performances that saw them concede their spot atop the league standings. As a second half substitute, who came on at the hour mark away to Real Betis, Frenkie conceded a penalty and was dreadful the remainder of the match. The final insult was Barça’s big clash against Atletico Madrid at home prior to the winter break. Frenkie did not start ahead of Marc Casado, and when Hansi Flick subbed off Casado in the 80^th minute in a 1-1; Frenkie remained on the bench while much maligned center back Eric Garcia got the nod. Barça ended up losing the match 1-2 and Frenkie never got on the pitch. In fact, he also didn’t feature in Barça’s prior game against Leganes who are fighting for survival.

Although Frenkie de Jong may still be deemed an important asset for the Oranje, the same can’t be said for his current club. At the moment, he is the Barça Grinch. Fans always look for a scapegoat or a whipping boy, to aim their hatred at, and right now, Frenkie is ahead of the pack of the least popular Barça player. Hopefully, Frenkie de Jong will return to the promise he once held. After all, if the Grinch was able to redeem himself, then maybe, just maybe, Frenkie’s best days with the Blaugrana are yet to come. If not, perhaps he can redeem himself by finding a new club in January.

All Hail Raphinha.

The Blaugrana Faithful are enjoying this great start by their beloved Barça. With a new manager, and a young star blossoming in front of our eyes, hopes were high. Barça’s great start to the season has been a wonderful surprise, but the bigger surprise has to be the player leading the charge when most expected him gone; Raphinha.

Barça fans were enthusiastic about the upcoming 2024-2025 season. Hansi Flick was hired to be the man in charge. Lamine Yamal was coming off winning Euro 2024 with Spain where he was voted Young Player of the Tournament, and Barça signed former youth player Dani Olmo, who shined at Euro 2024. Barça fans were also enthusiastic about the possibility of the signing of another key player from that triumphant Spanish side, Nico Williams at the expense of Raphinha being sold to another club.

Fast forward to today, and all the enthusiasm has been rewarded with Barça being league leaders and doing well in the Champions League. The Nico Williams transfer never went through, but thankfully Raphinha has not made us think of Nico once. So far this season, in just 12 matches in La Liga and Champions League, Raphinha has scored 9 goals and has 6 assists.

Raphinha could have easily sulked and complained about his situation and future at the club. Instead, he has been very professional and it had to be noticed by his teammates when they voted him to be one of the captains of the team. Raphinha has been sensational and will be wearing the captain’s armband in El Clasico at Madrid. If Raphinha continues to shine like this, it won’t be long before we start comparing him with other Brazilian Barça legends such as Romario, Ronaldo, Rivado, Ronaldinho and Neymar.

Brotherly Love; A History of Oranje Brothers.

The Netherlands National Team has a rich history of brothers representing the Oranje over the years. With today being Nationale Broer en Zus Dag (Brother and Sisters Day) in the Netherlands, it’s a fitting tribute to remember the incredible bonds of brotherhood that have shaped Dutch football over the years, from the early 20th century to the modern game. Some brothers have even played on the same pitch together at the biggest stage in different decades. The most recent brothers to share that honor are Jurriën and Quinten Timber.

Since the 1970s, the Oranje always had been known for their orange home shirt, Total Football, and the presence of brothers in the squad. It is surprising that such a small footballing nation has provided so many footballing brothers, including twin brothers, to the national team. Some have played together on the same pitch at the big stage, and there has been the rare occasion of both brothers scoring in the same game. However, the history of brothers representing the Oranje dates back to the early 1900s.

The first pair of brothers to ever represent the Netherlands were Tonny and Dé Kessler back in 1913 against an England amateur side. That would be their first and only match together. The next brothers to follow in their steps would be Mannus and Jacques Francken a year later against Belgium. In 1928, Wim and Gerard Tap would be the last brothers to represent the Netherlands against Italy, until 1974.

The next few decades would see more brothers get the honor of being siblings who played for the national team, but not represent the Oranje together. That would change in 1974 when the twin brothers René and Willy van de Kerkhof would be part of the Oranje. Both were called up for the 1974 World Cup, but only René would get to play in that competition. However, they did start all seven matches during the 1978 World Cup where the Netherlands would lose to Argentina in the Final. They also represented the Oranje at the 1976 and 1980 European Championships. They would collect a combined 110 caps, and to this day, no other pair of brothers would feature in four different international tournaments for the Netherlands.

The van de Kerkhof era would end in the 1980s, but a new era would begin in 1983 through the Koeman brothers. Erwin and Ronald Koeman amassed a combined 109 caps and would become the only brothers to win a major international trophy for the Netherlands. The Koeman brothers made their debut together in 1983 against Sweden and five years later, they played their part in helping the Oranje win Euro 1988. Erwin did not play in the opening game of that tournament but would go on to play with his brother Ronald in the following four matches that the Oranje won, including the Final. The 1990 World Cup would be the final major competition that the Koeman brothers would play together and their era would end in 1994 against Tunisia in which was their 26^th and final match together.

The 1990’s would kick off with the Witschge brothers and the de Boer brothers featuring for the Oranje. Rob and Richard Witschge represented the Oranje throughout the 90s with a combined 61 caps, and would feature in four different tournaments, but never together. In fact, they only played together once, in 1992 against then Yugoslavia. A year later, another set of twin brothers would go on to feature the Netherlands for the next decade.

Frank and Ronald de Boer made their debut against San Marino in a 1994 World Cup Qualifier in 1993 and would go on to feature for the Oranje a combined 179 times. They would also play together a record 56 times, The de Boer twins also have the famous distinction of both scoring a goal, which was against Wales in 1996. Moreover, the de Boer twins got to play with the Koeman brothers on three separate occasions. The set of brothers would start against England in 1993 in a 1994 World Cup Qualifiers and all four brothers would start the next match against Poland. In those matches, the Ronalds would each score for the Oranje. Ronald Koeman scored against England and Ronald de Boer scored against Poland. Ronald Koeman would also score in their final appearance with the de Boer twins in a friendly against Tunisia in 1994.

The de Boer brothers would go on to represent the Oranje into the next decade, with Frank de Boer becoming the first player to gain 100 caps for the Dutch. They would feature together in the 1994 and 1998 World Cups and Euro 2000. Ronald de Boer’s final cap would come in 2003 against Moldova with his brother Frank on the pitch. Frank’s final cap would come in 2004 after picking up an injury in the Euro 2004 Quarter-Final against Sweden. Since then, we would see Collins and Ola John, and then Siem and Luuk de Jong brothers represent the Oranje, but not together at the same time, squad or on the same pitch.

It wasn’t until this month that we would finally see another set of brothers representing the Oranje again. On September 8, 2024, the twin brothers Jurriën and Quinten Timber got to sit together on the team bench and then appear as substitutes against Bosnia and Herzegovina in a UEFA Cup Nations. The Timber brothers became the third set of twins to play for the Netherlands and would repeat that feat two days later against Germany.

Time will tell whether we will continue to see future brothers representing the Oranje for many years to come. The Timber brothers’ presence bridged the past of the Oranje with the present and we hope we will see many brothers perform well for the Oranje in the future. Special recognition goes out to the hard work of Karel Stokkermans for his hard work and research in collecting all the data regarding Oranje brothers, “A Century of Brothers in Oranje” for the Rec.Sport.Soccer Statistics Foundation.
